The new box has this USB socket thingy (looks exactly like a USB socket to me) in the front. There is also a card slot beside the USB socket. Any idea what these are for? Thinking I might be able to hook it up to my computer and see what sort of communication goes on at that socket.

I believe the "card slot" is for an H card, but that's about all I know.

Don't have cable, & can't get it.

Viper that sucks man...I mean you're miss 500 channels of infomercials, CHIPs re-runs and 24-hour news networks;)

Anyhow, I've confirmed it is a USB socket. A USB cable does fit in the socket perfectly. I happen to have a USB networking adapter and I'm going to put it on the network and see what this baby has to offer:)

EDIT: That was a stupid idea....the damn thing needs drivers to work. Are their USB cables that only have the flatter-head connectors on both ends? This'll have to wait for a weekend project but I wouldn't mind trying to see what the USB socket is for by doing some reverse-engineering.

I recently got a similar (or same.. mine is Pioneer) box. It came with my Roadrunner in a package.. I really like having 500 channels so far :)

You don't happen to think that the USB socket might be a built in Internet connection-sharing mechanism so that they just have to hook up to a computer with a USB cable (and skip a cable modem completely) do you? I haven't hooked up the new box but the old digital box could receive "e-mail" and downloaded TV schedules so maybe it has full blown internet capabilities now.

Any channels at all would be better than the 1.5 channels I get in the middle of BFE.

(That's one channel that's watchable, & one that's occasionally bearable but usually not. That's the extent of my TV reception.)

AHA!

<< Explorer 3100 - The Scientific-Atlanta set-top family has been expanded with the addition of the Explorer 3100 model, an interactive digital set-top designed for improved performance with more consumer-friendly features and packaging. Like the 2100 model, this set-top has a consumer-friendly front panel with an improved user layout and additional keys for easy access to the program guide, help information and set-top settings, plus a front-panel USB port for connecting devices such as digital cameras or camcorders. >>
