Cable and DSL not an Option, Are there any others ?

Well I have to accept the fact that Cable and DSL will probably never come my way. I have been using dial-up and getting at most 28.8k. I have had some issues with the phone line and the tech made some changes last night. Now I get a whopping 12.0k. I have had enough and am looking at other options. Right now I only see 2. Satellite and as GSM/Edge Data Plan from cingular or such. Can anyone with any experience offer me some suggestions. Cingular would be preferred as I can sign up with them for 79.00 and then it is 59.00 a month after that, satellite I am looking at 300.00 min to get started and then 59.99 a month. Or if you know of some options that I have over looked please let me know. This will only be used to surf, email, and download music every now and then, no gaming or large downloads.

I do not advocate, endorse or even recommend you go with this overpriced, worthless internet service. But it is available for you.

I've heard that WildBlue is infinitely better than Direc-Way, though I've not personally used it. You might check it out.

Oh, and if you go with Direc-Way, you might also check out some of their resellers. You can sometimes get a better deal through them than through Direc-Way themselves.

Hey 2Can, I feel your pain. In the tornado target I used to live in, the best I could get was 28.8k with no broadband in sight. The eye in the sky was not an option cause I do alot of online gaming. I got a second phone and bought another modem and shotgunned them using XP. Yes Windows actually has the stuff to bind the two together. I had to switch to an ISP that suppported it but it actually worked out pretty good. I have had cable now for a few years but back in the day I know that a win modem was slower then a "hard" modem because it took the processing off the cpu. Dont know if it still holds true or not with todays cpus. Also any phones answering machines or fax machines on the lines slow you also. I rewired my tornado target and cut out 3 jacks that were not used and picked it up to 33.6k. With both phone lines I got around I think 65k to 70k.

i had direc-way for about 2 years. it sucked. teh FAP is nasty. if you use it to much they lock your rates down to below dial up speeds. i think the cap is 1gig a month (wich is very easy to hit).

also it would go out at any storm. also it is very expensive ($400 for equipment+monthly fee).

then i found a wireless DSL place. T6broadband.com for $42 i get a connection that while is not faster it is more reliable and less droped packets wich kinda make it faster.

i would NEVER go back to satalite at all.

You can't do DSL if the local central office doesn't have a DSLAM installed, or if you're much more than 3 miles from the CO. The signal just won't go that far.

Come to Columbus, OH. We have DSL for $12.

Bah. Except for those of us who live *just* far enough South that no broadband is available at all.

HAHAHAHA!!! I manage to connect at 31.2 at least 2 or 3 times a week. 😛

I feel your pain. The only "alternative" is direcway, and I'd exceed their cap within the first week of each month, simply because I would revert to "normal" surfing and things online. (I look at jpgs, but all but refuse to click on any video link) Heck, I drive to my school to do a lot of my reading; 500k pdf documents are a pita, especially when you look at about 30 articles for every 3 or 4 you read.

Think about it... when people have to consciously make the decision "do I look at that picture or don't I" - that's how bad it is... so, I feel for ya, 2cansam.

Hey, here's a hint for you: Tabbed browsing... usually I have about 15-20 tabs loading while I'm reading 1 tab. Aside from the first 5 minutes online, it goes quite smoothly after that.

Now I'm jealous. I'm lucky to even connect at 26.4... happens maybe once or twice a month. And preloading tabs... yeah, I try that, but I tend not to be on a single page for very long, so that doesn't work well for me.

Talked with Tmobile today and gonna go that route. 200.00 to start for the card and then 50.00 a month there after and that includes unlimited use of thier wifi hotspots. I will have 15 days to try it out risk free so no loss there. If it is no good I will pursue the wirenone sugestion from dmcowen.

My girlfriend's father used to use DirecWay, could that equipment be used by someone else?

yes.

When i baught my house i paid a little to get the old owners equipment. NOw that opened up a lot of other problems.

one was that she owed them like $400 in past due bills. they claimed that the past due was on the equipment and not the person. it took me about 2 weeks to have the hook me up on my own bill. BUT they still tried to charge me the $400 a few times.

I'm amazed that you ever escaped from that nightmare. From what I've heard, it's company policy to keep past due bills with equipment and with accounts, independently, rather than just with the account.

I've been thinking of looking for something better than my slow dial-up lately too. I usually connect at 24.0k.

I'm out in the sticks so i don't think wireless would work for me.

Here's the 3 satallite providers i've read about.
Starband - i talked to a local distributor & it's possible to get used equipment for about half the price of new.
HughNet - used to be DirectWay
WildBlue - don't know anything about these guys

I've noticed when a connect my other comp to get virus & Windows updates that it'll usually connect at a little faster speed.
Maybe just get a better modem? Never really thought that they would be much different.
