Cabinet Cooling

We have an older Mac that runs hot in our new, built in shelf system. We have drilled 4 3" holes on each side, but it still runs hot.

We would like to mount some fans in these holes. I assume we'd have to square them off.

What fans and psu woudl you suggest? Can this be done for less than $100?

Well for PSUs... you really don't need a computer one. I've seen it done before with a computer PSU, but that's just because we had an old one lying around at the store.

You could probably get a cheap DC power supply from radio shack or whatever, and just get 2 fans and wire them up. Make sure the PSU is powerful enough to drive the fans.

And I'd say this can most definitely be done for less than $100.

Check your local surplus store, i.e. Active surplus or stuff like that. You can probably do it for $30

Put a piece of screening (say over a 6x6" square or 7 or 8" diameter hole) in the floor of the cabinet near the front of the PC and mount a 120mm fan in a hole (takes a bit over a 4" hole) near the upper rear of the cabinet section where the PC is. That should keep most any PC comfortable.
