Anyone know if the cabin air filter for a 2011 lancer gts is easily replaceable without the need to go to a mechanic. I've been sitting at the stealership for my oil change for about 2 hours and they want 70 bucks to change it. I said no because they replaced it last time.

Did you check the owners manual?

A friend of mine was getting her oil changed in a 2011 Honda Fit at the dealership and they quoted her the same thing.

She purchased her own filter from NAPA I believe for around $20 ish, and changed it in 2 minutes. I believe she had to remove to clips in the glove box and change it in there.

Yeah I want to do it myself. Misplaced the manual so I'm checking on YouTube.

In my cars its a simple matter of squeeze sides of glovebox door, unhook cable allow glovebox to drop and that exposes the cabin filter.

heh on a 99-03 honda odyssey, the first time you need a saw to cut a long plastic piece out after removing the glovebox. then you have to bend a bunch of panels and hope you don't lose screws in the bowels of the car.

Same process as most non-luxury cars. All behind the glove box which usually just pops out. Might need a flat head screw driver to pop the clips out on the glove box. Easy as pie. It's a good idea to check them occasionally because leaves and dirt can get in there and clog it. Just give it a good shake. As long as it's not black, you're good to go. ;)

Now some luxury cars hid it in the centre of the dash. I know with Lexus, you have to pull up the damn carpet to get at it. Pretty much forces you to take it to the dealer. Mind you these filters do next to nothing other than keep said leaves out.

Awesome :) looks like ill be buying my own air filter then. Only reason I took it to the dealership first time was for an oil change since other places didn't have the type of oil filter.

That video looks like the inside of my car, I think all lancers like the one in the video and up are the same. I'll check AutoZone on my way home to see if they have that filter.

The weird thing is the car has some plastic covering all over the underside or I would do my own oil change. This requires lifting the whole car up

yea they're exactly the same, push in the glove box from both sides, un hook the plastic holder, and you're good.

same as my lancer

You should only need to replace this at a maximum of once per year. Manual usually says to change every 30,000 miles.

Since you have a 2011 and replaced it once you might not need to change it again for a while.

Yeah I last had it replaced at 30k. I have 37900 miles on it now. I drive a lot to work about 25 miles or a little more each way. I would move closer but it costs more to live near work. I've always put a ton of miles on my cars.

Another good place to check is the AutoZone website. They have all sorts of instructions on doing work for your car, usually in pretty easy to follow instructions, with photographs. Sort of like an online Chilton's or Haynes manual.

Stealership wanted $160 for parts and labor to install one in my car. Apparently it didn't come with one factory install. I had my car for 7+ years and just found out about this until the stealership told me. Got the filter for $10 from amazon, installed it myself.

Yeah I only take it there for the mile services every couple thousand or so since I drive so much and it was my first new car. After the warranty runs out I'll be taking it to a local mechanic after all the major services are done. After you do the mile maintenance on a new car the only thing left is oil changes, brakes, tranny flush depending in the mileage.

It's so easy to change my bike's oil. All I need is someone to hold it straight if I don't have rear stands. Wish it was that easy with the car.

I was getting the check engine light checked out at my local(at the time) dealer(under warranty), and they asked if I wanted my cabin air filter replaced. I asked how much, they responded with 140 dollars! I said I would think about it, and since I had my computer with me, I checked out the the price online and ordered one from amazon for ~16 bucks.

A little while later, a bunch of us getting service done were chatting about various services. I had mentioned the crazy price they just tried to charge me, and this older woman (60+) lost all the color in her face and said, "I had them do that the last time I was here".

And I was so angry I left a horrible review on Yelp(among other reasons), and have never been back to that dealer since. Stay away from MetroWest Subaru in Natick, MA.

After working with dealerships for three years, all I can saw is their reputation is, for the most part, well deserved. Unfortunately, it's hard to find a good mechanic these days. Nobody has pride in their work anymore.

When I reached 16k miles on my lancer I had to bring it back to the dealership 3 times for the check engine light. They said it wad good, I got in and it was on again. So they looked at it again and said it was a computer error but if it happened again the timing chain would need replaced. At 16k!! Brand new car I had just acquired. Luckily up until now knock on wood, nothing has happened.

Thanks for posting that. Got a 2010 Lancer and its a good reminder that I need to check that to see if its dirty. One of those little things I never think of! Oh, mine's been very reliable (knock on wood). I've done nothing but change the oil. Typical cheap Japanese car.

Usually Mitsubishi cars are reliable. Depending on the year and model. I had a 98 3000gt that I bought with 117k Miles. I drove it and sold it with 203k on it. Had to rebuild the tranny because I drove it hard when I was young. But I did spend quite a bit on repairs.

You never know with high mileage sports cars if their owners had all maintenance done.
