What is up with all the cars not having any license plate at all in CA?
Even if they are new cars, don't they get a dealer license plate or one of these paper/temporary tags?

no, new cars get a sticker on the windshield in CA, no dealer plates

my g/f just got a new car about a year ago and i was amazed too, but yeah, no temp plates

That's not true all of the time...I see cars with dealer plates all the time.

Cars with dealer plates aren't sold.. they're just driven by employees of the dealership.

I had a similar question when I first came out here (SoCal). So many vehicles with either dealer plates or no plates at all, made me nervous that the non-plated vehicles were uninsured.

Yeah...I don't know WTF this thread is all about.

The only thing I can think of is that a lot of people don't have front plates and are supposed to, but nobody cares.

no this thread is about no plates at all, which occurs in california when you buy a new car.

most states put paper or plastic temporary plates on your car, but california just puts a piece of paper in your front windshield

Those are cars driven by the owners, or managers. They are known as demonstrators, which is a perk, where a manager is supplied a new car to drive. 🙂

new cars get a sticker that has the owner name, where bought, vin number and something else.

The DLR plates are for dealer use only.. new cars get 'temp paper plates' .. meaning just an ad for teh company you bought it from.

You'd be surprised at the number of enthusiast's cars (hot rods, sports cars, and such) that are driving around unregistered with no plates in california, but with full comprehensive insurance coverage. California makes is exceedingly difficult to register cars with modified engines due to smog restrictions. Also, many people just plain think that they dont look good.

You almost never get pulled over in california solely for registration, and even if you do, if you get plates on the car and get it signed off, then you jsut pay a $10 fine and pull the plates back off the car. This is especially common with front plates, but happens sometimes with rear plates, too.

or when a customer is doing a test drive, i understand...

And some cars I looked for that piece of paper/sticker in the front windshield (hard to see of course) but I couldn't see one.

It's unbelievable but out of 100 cars I would say 10 do not have any license plates.

A lot of "dealers" here in Fl save tag money by using those "dealer" tags on their own vehicles .I see them ALL the time, and its obvious the car is not being test driven or anything of the sort...probably also affects the insurance. Sometimes I wonder if thats how people barred from driving or have had their registrations cancelled for DUI's keep a car.

my buddy has been driving thru the fastrack lanes on bridges for the past 3 months w/o a plate and w/o paying toll. he only shows the registration paper on the window. he got the plates in the mail, but is milking it as long as he could.
