I just got a speeding ticket in South Carolina. It states on the ticket 82mph in a 70mph-limit zone on Interstate 95. My driver's license is from California; car is registered in North Carolina. Fine is $135, which I don't see any way to not pay since I can't make it to court from 5 hours away. This is my first ever ticket.

My question: is there any way to keep this off my record? I wasn't able to find any definitive answer after a half-hour of searching.

And because ya'll are gonna castigate me for speeding: it was an empty interstate with just me in the left lane and semis in the right, I was on cruise control and not bothering anybody. Yes I was polite to the officer, I put my hands on the steering wheel, I turned the car off, I asked permission before reaching over to the glove box for my registration, but all that he did was ask me for my license and registration then come back 5 minutes later with a filled-out ticket.

Just don't pay it as long as you never plan on going back to SC again.

J/K, not sure if that would work but I know someone who got an out of state parking ticket. Never paid, got a couple letters in the mail, they eventually stopped trying and life moved on. I doubt another state is going to send a tow truck over to your house.

Only if there is no reciprocity between SC and CA. If there is, CA will suspend your license.

Pay it. We South Carolinian's appreciate your $$.

Edit: 5 hrs for court? Procrastinated a little?

5 hours to get there, I imagine.

We're a little slow 'round here but not that slow. Unless you get behind an old blue hair in her land boat. Then you're screwed.:D

Edit: Re-read op. A new skill for me. Misunderstood the first time. Yep, 5 hrs away.

Get a lawyer. The one time I've gotten a speeding ticket, similar to yours, 85 in a 70, which in the great state of NC is a reckless driving offense, I got about a half dozen letters in the mail sent to me from lawyers offering to represent me. I called a few of them a picked one. Sent him a check for like $325 which covered any fine I would receive and he went to court for me so I didn't have to. Eventually I got a letter back from him that he had gotten it knocked down to an equipment malfunction which won't appear on your record.

I doubt anyone would hunt you down for a parking ticket. A speeding ticket, however, is different. This isn't the 70's anymore, all states except 5 share information with each other, so it is going to appear on your record regardless of where you got it. Good luck getting your plates or license renewed with an unpaid speeding ticket on your record.

Were you driving a toyota?

No, I was literally on the way home from the dealership after getting my new car, no joke. Since it was a pre-bailout GM vehicle, the lawyer told the judge that I was hurrying to get as close to home as possible before it broke down, to minimize the amount of walking I would have to do. So nothing had actually malfunctioned yet, but because it was inevitable, I got out of the ticket.

Hmm, same exact story for me, just change 85 to 92

i got a ticket in nevada once just over the border from CA.

i traffic schooled it and it never showed up on my record . even though i was in the 18 months of traffic school for CA also (so i got 2 tickets in 1 in each state in like a 9 month span).

12 over is probably traffic schoolable. just pay the fine and do traffic school online if you can. if not , 1 point isnt going to kill you . usually states do not share traffic ticket info anyway unless they are say states that border each other and are smaller (like new england)

You were speeding and got caught. Just man up and pay the ticket and move on with your life.

Per this link: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/vioptct.htm
an out of state speeding ticket is only 1 point on your California License. Still, it may worth getting an attorney in South Carolina to try and fight it. Your record is clean, so that should help to reduce it to something with only a monetary hit.

LOL
Is that really what he said? Your lawyer is the best.

Some of the red neck hick towns around here would have you in the jail for that.
That is messed up. 22mph over the limit is about 35km/h; I once got a ticket for doing 38km/h over and the ticket was something like $350. I had a lawyer knock it down to $270 but only 2 points on my record. I think the standard penalty was 4 points, so that's really nice he was able to do that.

Any deferral program? I had a 165$ ticket from Indiana State Patrol for 70 in a 60. I paid 195 for a deferral and had no tickets for their 6 month alotment. I got the letter in the mail saying i successfully cleared the program and my charges are dismissed on the 7th this month. I confirmed with a trip to the DMV, and it shows my record clean.

Or send money to lawyer, have it dropped, and move on with your life.

Real men kill themselves when they get a speeding ticket.

So after investigation.. it appears Michigan does not participate in this sharing program with anyone but Ontario. Does that mean that if I got a ticket in California, I could just not pay it and if I never went back they couldn't do anything?

yeah more or less. i think they actually clear off your record after a certain number of years too.

No, but the judge can issue an warranty for your arrest if you don't pay the ticket or show up for court.

Here's one example from google. You can search on your own time.

Possibly. My friend has warrants in British Columbia right now because of this :D
