I know Cingular won't have it until October. I tried to get my phone upgraded in Chicago, but I couldn't, because the person from customer service couldn't find a box to select for GSM in Maryland, even though I would be using the phone out in Chicago, without changing my home calling area.

I couldn't tell you about AT&T, though...actually, I don't know anybody back home who uses AT&T...

it will work, and i don't believe they'll charge you extra. i'd still call to confirm if it were me, though.

I live in Wash DC and I've been told by various AT&T reps to not upgrade to the GSM service. They told me coverage is very spotty out here. That's why I'm still using their TDMA phones

My dual Mode Seimens phone w/ AT&T switches automatically between network types.

Do they charge you if you use the TDMA network?

Check their coverage map. You will not be charged to use outside your "home area".
Dual-use phone service is not covered under ATT's unlimited GSM plan, so if it switches, you get charged (*if* it even connects).
