c_437.nls can not be found

c_437.nls couldn't be found, Windows XP wouldn't boot up, so I did a bit of Googling for the error:

Windows cannont start, the file /WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/c_437.nls is missing
or corrupt.
and found that i need to EXPAND the files from the CD onto the hard disk. I try the command for that, and it doesn't work.

Then I figure out I could use COPY, so I type in the exact same thing for EXPAND, except, instead of EXPAND I use COPY:

copy f:\i386\c_437.nl_ c:\windows\system32\c_437.nls

After a few seconds of crunching, the computer responds with a "Access is denied" error.

What can I do?

I don't want to format this machine becase

I ran through the first step of doing

  • chkdsk /r

twice, and it stops at 33%, both times.

Then I tried typing in

  • cd system32

to try out the next step, and realiazed that the computer takes ages (>5 seconds) just to process the command.

I thought there was a virus, so I ran a virusscan using an older version of Hiren's boot disk, and it seems that nothing can be found. The drive can not be found.

Is this a problem with the MBR? Or somehting else?

Never mind, I just formatted the computer since there wasn't anything important on it.

Thanks for the help though.
