Even in a nice neighborhood I would park in a garage. Cars get vandalized all the time regardless of where you live. Affluent kids think it's funny just like any other kids.

I'm going by what I've read and most of the vandalism stories on my other forum are from apartment complex parking lots.
The priority is not owning or renting, it is having a safe place to park your $70k car. In a perfect world shit like this would not happen. But it does.

I have a 2012 Camaro convertible. I usually park well away from everything if I am running an errand. I zipped in to the supermarket once, parked and noticed there was a guy sitting in a white Ford pickup to my right, smoking a joint. Probably waiting for his "old lady". He gave my car then me such a look of hate. I thought nothing of it, haters gonna hate. I come out of the store, truck is gone and there is a door ding in my car, stitch of white paint. I'm guessing the guy opened his door into my car on purpose. Only cost me $60 cash to have the dent repair guy pull it. Lucky this time.
My cars sits in my double garage and there is secure underground parking at work.

I've encountered that. when I get a bad feeling, I just roll my own joint and stare at the dude until he's gone. Then I leave and go to another store. People are fucking insane and I don't take the risk.

What I was going to say.

Who, or why would anyone own a car of that cost yet live in an Apartment complex?

Sad story, but you gotta be proactive. Move to a place that has a garage or run the risk of people being jealous and doing dumb things.

Edit: Looks like she is moving to a place with a garage. Smart move.

A quick stroll through my apartment's parking garage turns up a pair of Jaguar XKs, a brand new 911 Turbo S, a couple Range Rovers, a Bentley Continental GT, a C6 Z06, a couple of AMG type Mercedes, and a Cayenne Turbo.

I own a house in Dallas-Fort Worth, but move constantly due to the military. Most of the people in my building are military or government workers and move frequently, so it makes more sense to rent an apartment than buy and sell houses every 2-3 years.

I will say that we've suffered a huge number of car break-ins due to the lack of a gate, and the building being surrounded by crappy neighborhoods. I (foolishly) hooked up with a dummy in my building that had her window smashed and 3 ipads stolen off the front seat of her Escalade. And yet she continues to leave ipads on the front seat. :\

I never said she deserved it.

Ive seen people get VERY irate over double parking at condo/apartment complexes. I used to have a neighbor who would get into peoples faces over it.

Dont park like a douche if you dont want people to treat you like one. Everyone should know better than to park like a that. There is no excuse to inconvenience others by doing so. If you do, you are asking people to get mad at you.
Some people in this world are irrational, uncontrollable, short-fused, mouth breathing, brainfarts (USFMBBF). Its best not to piss these people off. When it comes to this car I can only assume that it was an irrational, uncontrollable, short-fused, mouth breathing, brainfart who could perform this act. Her car was specifically chosen for this treatment, as the article makes no other reference to other cars with the same damage - so it was targeted. The car just happened to be a convenient/unfortunate means of retaliation for something which the owner did (which may or may not have been something as mundane as double parking).

So again, did she deserve to have her car vandalized? Absolutely not.
Was she asking for it? Quite possibly... if she was actually double parked.

Its the same reason I dont walk through the middle of Chicago with gold chains, gold watch, flashing money everywhere as a small white dude. Ill get robbed/killed instantly.
Do I deserve to? No.
Was I asking for it? You betcha.

I dont think 'deserves' and 'asking for it' are synonymous.

But this is all hypothetical.
... and I want to know what its like to argue like Alkemyst. :D

That looked like someone went to the hardware store and bought a full can of "strip-eze" just for this purpose, a spur of the moment thing would be a key-job. People are just fucked, I drive a black '05 Malibu LT and someone keyed the crap out of it, a F-ing 9yr old plain-Jane Malibu and it got keyed. Guess I got what I deserved by keeping it nice-looking and waxed, they must of thought it was a newer car LOL..

yup. my point. Targeted, planned, and purposefully done... meant for her and only her.

you just COMPLETELY missed the point of the quoted text. Keying is random. Kids key cars all the time just for shits'n'giggles. You weren't targeted. You were convenient.

EDIT: FOR A THIRD TIME: I DIDN'T SAY SHE DESERVES IT.

Not all apartment complexes are the same. I'm willing to bet this was not a high end complex. Montgomery Plaza in Fort Worth has town homes ranging from $300k (~800 sq ft) to $1.5M. Plenty of high end cars there including Lambos and Ferraris. BUT that's not your typically apartment complex. They also have secured garage parking.

I don't see how anyone would buy an expensive car and be okay with leaving it open aired or even open-covered parking. A garage would be a requirement for me at least since I tend to care about what I buy.

I lived in what I would call a nice apartment complex last year, too bad the people that lived there didn't match. They would share apartments in order to cut down on rent, and then get Mercedes, Lexus, Infinitis, Corvettes, and the like. Some people enjoy living on the extreme side of "Car rich, house poor" I guess.

Parking most new cars in low income areas is a bad idea. I picked up a 09 WRX in November of 2008 when I was living in a house with 3 other people. We all had cars but only 2 parking spots so 2 cars were always parked in the street. The area wasn't the best but I felt safe. In February of 2009, I came out one day and found 4 huge dents in the roof and one on the hood. The body shop said it looked like someone had jumped on the car and run over the roof. Repairs were 1800$ (insurance paid).

After that, I paid a neighbor who had a longer hidden driveway to park behind his house and had no further problems.

I just sent this to like 10 people. Hilarious.

I had a buddy in college that drove a Dodge 3500 with a huge grill guard and steel rear bumper. He used to push cars around all the time. I remember one time I was with him when an old lady in a cadillac was sitting at a green light for like 30 seconds as he honked and screamed, "MOVE, FUCKER" out the window. Finally he just put it in low gear and pushed her into the intersection so he could get around. Unfortunately her rear bumper caught on the grill guard and was ripped off. It fell off the truck after like a quarter mile though. :D

Just college shenanigans man. I remember being in the backseat of the same truck when he was taking his big bro (fraternity) back to his parents house to sleep off an epic amount of boozing (that kid was a no kidding alcoholic.) Drunk bro reaches into the center console, grabs a glock 27, goes, "is this thing loaded" and fires a round out the passenger side window. This was in the middle of one of a neighborhood in one of the most affluent cities in the US. We were shitting bricks for the rest of the night.

21 year olds should probably not have giant, powerful, indestructible trucks. Except MRAPs. But they only have those in places where it doesn't matter what they wreck. :D

Ahhh the affluenza defense, by all means do proceed with the douchebaggery. Vandalizing a C7 with paint stripper is NOTHING compared to vehicular terrorism and random gunfire. To do it right you need to set the Corvette on fire and wait for the owner to come out and assault them right? Hell yeah, PARTY ON you low life scumbag.....

I think it would be fair for the vandals to receive punishment and that she should get towed for parking like a jackass if she did not own both spots.

Something tells me the vandals will never be found and she won't receive any sort of reprimand for taking up two spots.

Life ain't fair.

No, that isn't college shenanigans. It is being an idiot who deserves to get shot for intentionally hitting someone's car. He should consider himself lucky he didn't get shot for endangering the lives of other motorists with his stupidity.

QFT - I went to a school that has a very large football / party culture. Nothing described above has anything to do with "college shenagigans." Honestly, I'm not sure how someone who does that even gets into college (or quite frankly how pushing a car into an intersection isn't reported / investigated). That would get you shot in these parts.
