I'm about to build a new rig for a friend, using an ASUS P5GDI PRO motherboard which I want to equip with 2x512 PC3200 RAM (no overclocking).
I want to get him the most bang for his buck, while at the same time making certain that things'll run rock-solid, so my plan has been to find the cheapest 'namebrand' RAM rated at C2.5 which is also listed at that motherboards' QVL.
Until I saw the Value RAM Roundup on Anandtech, I was going to go with 2 blocks of Geil GE5123200B, as it is reasonably priced, on the QVL and rated at C2.5.
But after reading the Value RAM roundup, I'm considering the Kingston KVR400X64C3AK2/1G, as it's about $35 cheaper than the Geil solution, and according to Anandtech can be run at C2.5 'at the stock DDR400 at standard voltage', even though it's rated at C3.
Now the questions:
1: Running this RAM at C2.5 is just at matter af setting it up to do so in the BIOS, right?
2: Can I be certain that the BIOS with the motherboard I'm getting has the option of running the RAM at 2.5-3-3-6 timings?
3: Can I be certain that the pack of RAM I'm getting will perform just as well as the pack Anandtech tested?
4: On the QVL for my motherboard there are 3 listings of Kingston RAM called 'KVR400X64C3', but the 'KVR400X64C3K2/1G' isn't on the list. Does this matter?
Thanks for your help!
