c2q (stock cooler) getting way too loud - something amiss?

We have a few original C2Q 2.66 machines here in the office with stock Intel coolers. Whenever loading the CPU to 100% for any extended period of time, the fan gets SUPER loud - way more so than on other C2Q machines. Once the load is removed it backs down, but this doesn't seem normal. This is one of the first stock coolers (has a 4 pin wire). Is there any setting I can change to not have it spin up so much? The chip isn't really overheating. Alternately I could possibly change the TIM from stock to AS. If I want to make it quieter though, am I more or less stuck with getting a new cooler?

For me, every stock intel cooler since the intro of C2D has been a turbine rattling pos even when new. You can't even drop oil into the bearings on many of them because the intel fans are a closed design.

If you want silence I would get the biggest sink that would fit in the machine and use a quiet fan. I dislike pwm (the 4 pin fans) because of variable sound. Big heatsink and a quiet static rpm fan (no faster than 1000-1500rpm providing the heatsink is good enough) is most ideal.

That's true, bearings could be going bad. Do you think replacing the stock TIM with AS3 would do the trick? If I could get a 5C difference that might work. I'll see if we can get different coolers though.

you should be able to change fan settings thru the BIOS if your cooler supports it (or speedfan)

Like God Mode, I suggest you just get a new heatsink for ~$20-30. Most companies have a budget/mainstream line that should provide great silent performance (even passive) at a good price.

I'd also make sure they're not caked up full of dust. I've heard horror stories about the amount of dust the Intel heatsinks can accumulate.

Theres a reason why its spinning really fast...

You dont want to decrease it, without changing the mass on the sink..

Meaning you want a quieter cooler, get a new bigger cooler.
