Is't okay if I'm going to use a Generic PSU for my Q6600? While saving up for HEC..

Not sure why it wouldn't unless your system is overloaded with other stuff and the Q6600 is the straw on the camel's back. I run a generic PS and it works fine; it was one of the free after rebate PS's from Fry's last year so no doubt it's not high end.

Actually, it all depends on which generic PSU you're planning on using, and what else you're planning on powering. I can guarantee you that a 200 watt generic won't power a Q6600, plus an 8800 GTX video card, for instance. If it's a heftier generic, and you aren't going to have a stout video card, plus six hard drives, two optical drives, and five high speed 120mm fans, it will probably be fine.

I have a friend that runs a Q6600 oced to 3 ghz, a 7800 GT, 2 gigs of ram and a hard drive on the cheapest model of 400W PSU ( it came with the case for a total of 30$ ). I told him that it wouldn't work, but it looks like it does its job pretty well. How long it will last, well that is another problem.

So, the thing is that if you don't have a lot of hard drives and a x2900XT or something like that, the generic PSU should hold you until you'll buy a better one. But don't use it for a long time.

I wouldn't recommend using a generic PSU long term, even if it does work at first - most generic ones my mates have had ended up failing within a year, sometimes earlier, so I just wouldn't take the risk. Make sure you plan to get a branded PSU at some point in the future tbh.

I think myocardia's response was a hint for you to provide your system specs, so we can serve you better.

I Agree............IMO, A power supply isn't something to go cheep on. Give your specs and this will give us an idea of what you are powering. I am sure you will find deals around the estores to accommodate your system and your budget.

it's either gonna work and be good, or fail. i've had barebone kit based machines (the really cheapy MSI ones) where the PSU has been going for years now, others have died within the first few months. :(

OT: Which is easy to OC Q6600 or the new Q9300?

Q6600 is easier to OC due to the high multi. As for your generic power supply, you left out all relevent info, so it's impossible to answer your question.
