C2D temp question

This may sound like a very nub question but I was wondering what temps to be concerned about when overclocking a C2D.

For instance, in Speedfan I get 3 seperate temp readings. All 3 are pretty obvious.
Cpu temp = 'overall' temp
Cores are core temps..

Anyways here is what I get @ load running Orthos [cpu = 3.3 overclocked E2180-1.4v@load]

Cpu temp: 68c
Core0-55c
Core1-56c

Now Ive been hearing that 65+c is not something you want to reach when overclocking a C2D and so Ive been trying to get my temps down...But if thats referring to Core temps I have alot of headroom to go..which is why im asking :)

Is it Core temp to be concerned with or 'Cpu' temp ?

And also, if it is the Cpu temp to be worried about..what is a good area to avoid for temps, cause ive had no issues with Orthos hitting even 70c so far. I know with A64s the cpu would blue screen at 60'ish..any ballpark figures for that with the C2Ds if Cpu temp matters ?

Download and use the latest version of coretemp, it is generally regarded as the most accurate. Everest is very good as well. Speedfan has fallen off with temp accuracy the C2D chips.

Ok I have Core temp, its only showing readings for the two cpu cores though. So do I go by the Core temps themselves and not worry about the overall temp of the Cpu that other programs provide?

I personally use RealTemp also and suggest you try it and compare it to coretemp as they should be very close. I think it's better to not rely on just one data point for temps.

And yes, just worry about the core temps.

EDIT: Actually, I didn't realize you are using a 65nm chip. Real temp is set up for 45 nm chips, and I do not think it will read correct for your CPU (not 100% sure about this though). You should compare coretemp with Everest and/or hwmonitor.

Ok thanks, I have alot of headroom then. The programs I have installed now are Asus probe 2, Core temp and Speedfan...Im mainly going off of Core temp by itself now as the last time I used speedfan/Asus probe, they showed my cpu@95c idle, then 140c load. It was random but still, not good to scare me!

coretemp or realtemp for the cores only.

55/56 should give you a little more headroom for the oc. 3.3ghz is already good for the 2180, and you have great temps at 55C load too.

Sounds good. What would you say is a 'good' max temp to look out for for the cores, Im at 59 peak running orthos now on the Cores. Upped the voltage a tad to hit 3.3 stable.

Ive heard it is 65-70c but the sites where that was listed were not really reputable [gamefaqs for one..].
