so i decided to make this my HTPC but something's bothering me...

C2D E7400 w/ stock cooler
ASUS P5kPL-CM
Radeon HD4670 HIS ICEQ

so i'm hitting 46C on IDLE

is that normal or is there something wrong?

EDIT: i messed up on the thread title... if a mod wants to fix it for me i'd appreciate it.

Depends on the case and its cooling... For most small HTPC cases with basicly no fans then its about right... To fix your title just go under "advanced" after you go into edit, there you can edit the title as well...

well im using a normal ATX case with a fan in the back pushing air OUT of the case.

thanks for telling me how to change the title... ._. never made the mistake before so i had no idea how to change it.

Intel stock cooler is crap. that being said, 46C Idle is still high. whats the room temperature? perhaps it would be best to invest 30$ in a mid range aftermarket cooler.

While that idle temp is a bit on the high side, these Intel CPUs can handle beyond 80ºC.

Things to check are... is the stock HSF installed properly? Do you have EIST enabled? The CPU is a Wolfdale and should clock itself down when idling, unless it is disabled in BIOS. Is the CPU fan spinning? Is the CPU heatsink clogged with dust? If you were re-using the HSF, did you put fresh thermal compound on it?

46C is high but still within to my acceptable range of an Intel CPU. What matters more is the load temp and if the temp difference is not big enough and your load temp is within a safe range then there is nothing to worry about.

The chips are pretty durable and I ran before a Intel C2E X9000 at 100C before due to poor ventilation of the heatsink and it still survived till now. After some tweaking and cleaning it is around 60C max these days.
