Hi friends, long time reader but first time poster.
I finally finished the assemble and test of my latest box and wanted to share the results of a very solid box and. Maybe someone can use the info.
Here it is:
C2D E6600 @ 3375Ghz (375 bus speed x9 ? Rated FSB 1500) Vcore 1.4875v, NB 1.393v. That?s a 40% OC
Ram 4 x 1 Gb of Corsair XMS2 6400C4 (800Mhz), timings 4-4-4-12, Trc 22, Twtr 15, rest on auto, OC to 900 mhz and cooled with Dominator Cooling Fan, at 2.178v, relation FSB:MEM is 5:6. That?s a 12% OC.
ASUS P5N-E SLI 650i w/Thermaltake Extreme Spirit II Northbridge Chipset Cooler (Bios 602), everything disable in bios except Thermal Control Management. Temp: ~ 40 idle to 46 load C°
Video is 1x eVGA 8800GTS Superclocked 640MB (Bios hacked: 620 core/ 920 mem/ 1400 shaders), Temp Idle 56 C°, Load 75°. (Core +6%, +8% mem, 7% shaders)
Monitor 22" ACER AL2216W @ 1680x1050
Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum
2 x 160HD GB Maxtor on Nvidia based Raid 0 (Stripping)
1 x 300HD GB Maxtor
Agiler 1000w PS
Case Thermaltake Viking w/extra 12? fan on side (extracting)
Thermaltake Big Water SE CPU Liquid Cooling
Thermaltake TMG SL1 Dual Slot Fan
Shin-Etsu X23 Thermal Compound on CPU an NB
Speakers Logitech 5.1 Model X-530
OS are Windows XP Pro and Vista Ultimate (but not double booting, actually installed separately and selected via bios hard disk boot priority)
Video drivers Nvidia ver. 158.22
OC CPU Temps are: Idle: TJuntion = 36C°, Tcore = 37C° / 100% Load using Orthos = Juntion 44C° /Core 59 C° (peak)
Memory temp (measured using case probe): ~ 48C°
Temperature on my room is ~ 24 C°, remember this is Caracas!
Benchmarks:
a.- Base benchmark (No OC at all) gives a 3DMark06 = 9286
b.- Full OC (video, CPU and Ram)
3DMark06 > 11.014, this means an overall gain of 18% for gaming? actually what really matters ;-)
Trackmania United: 1680x1050, all maxed out > 58.6 fps
Orthos running 24 hours: no errors
Memtest 1.7 running 24 hours: no errors
My rule of thumb:
I only upgrade hardware when I?m sure I?m going to obtain -at least- a 200% of performance increase, it?s not going to cost me more that 1200 to 1400$ (not counting extras: new monitor, new sound card or speakers), and 18 months have passed since the last buying frenzy.
i.e.: Prior box: Pentium 3.4Ghz HT capable, 2.0 Gb ddr2 533mhz, eVga 7800 gt OC w/256 mb = 3540 points with 3DMark06 no OC (as you can see this time I gained a healthy 262%), now office box
and even before prior box: P4T533-C MB, 2.4Ghz P4, 1 GB 1066 Rambus, Xfx 5600 Geforce (3DMark06 = ~1200 points), now Ubuntu server at home.
To achieve my rules in the next pc I predict this hardware:
Octo or Decacore (8 to 10) at 4 Ghz w/16 - 20 Mb cache w/FSB at ~3200 Mhz
4Gb Ram GDDR3 1800-2200 Mhz
Video 400 Gbs/s transfer speed w/2048 Ram at 3000Mhz mem, core 2500 Mhz (something called 12K nvidia chipset ? Directx 11) ?
? and, of course, M$ patching Vista to SP2 to avoid a nasty hole in the kernel ?that could allow and unwanted user to achieve control of your box?
We?ll see
PS: Background: I?m 38 and have been doing this for the last 20+ years as a hobby. First pc: AT 8mhz, 256k ram, 20 MB HD and green monochromatic monitor.
