C (OS) partition of HDD is acting weird! Please Help!!

I formatted the hard drive some weeks ago, and since the freshly installed Win 7 x64 installation I am noticing this weird problem! The space of C partition of the the hard disk is acting very weirdly. Just yesterday night when I went to sleep the free space was 8+ gigs or something and now its showing 1.5 gigs or something. No, nothing has been downloaded on the drive, you can rule out that option. One thing I noticed previously, as I download a lot via IDM, some files keep the cache space (or whatever the heck it is called) on the C partition, but I uninstalled IDM, and the space is still same!

The total disk space is 50 GB. If I select all the icons under that partition the total used space is 25.6 GB. Then virtual memory allocated for that partition is 8183 MB/ 8GB. So a total of 34-35 GB, so technically 14-15 GB should be free.

And the figure is changing rapidly too, in fact so fast that when I started to write this topic it showing 1.18 GB, but now it shows 1.06 GB.

Please tell me what's going on. Is there a way to see if there are other programs (apps) which are occupying the space somehow?

Thanks in advance.

Here are two screenshots as well:

PS: I have run that Disk Cleanup thing for that partition, nothing noticeable there!

Avast, which you apparently use, is known to have a bug that causes the amount of space devoted to System Restore to move up beyond whatever limit you may have manually set.

There is at least one thread on that topic on Avast forums. It's acknowledged, but as far as I know has not been fixed.

You could have some other issue, but you should monitor System Restore to see if it's misbehaving due to Avast.

What to check under System Restore? I see that there are several Restore Points! If its due to Avast then I will uninstall that thing, as simple as that. I always keep it under Silent/ Gaming mode anyway, not that it matters, still...

vssadmin list shadowstorage

The above command will tell you how much space is devoted to and used by System Restore.

You can adjust the setting at control panel/system/system protection/configure.

Go there and move the slider wherever you want. Then keep track of it using the above command to see if Avast is fiddling with your setting.

If you started to encrypt your hard drive then bit locker can use up to 90% or more of your drive until it is complete then it will release free space back to the drive. Yeah avast is nasty I stopped using it 2 years ago.

Utorrent can be creating ballast files as it fills in tha ballast with real data. so if you do not care about utorrent files then delete them or put them on a thumb drive or other drive.

I have checked this, and I have disabled system protection for C partition. And I have deleted previous system restorations too.

Is this risky? I have never used any system restore in my life, and won't.

It would be nice to turn it on only when you are installing new hardware/software So during normal usage then no you do not need it.

Infected computers used to put their infection into the restore feature so when you remove the virus it can then reinfect by using this windows feature.

Okay, so what's the minimum value I should select? I mean what's the minimum size could I set?

PS: Uninstalled bloody Avast, that thing was sucking my D partition's space too! Installing back my ever favourite NIS.

Just totally disable it. Even 1% is fine if it allows you to go that low.
I've seen some get limited to 10 gig minimum.(maybe set by group policy.)

I have mine set to about 6 GB; that's normally good for 10 or 12 restore points.

I have no issues with System Restore. It has bailed me out numerous times. Not flawless, but it works 98% of the time as advertised.

No harm done if you don't want to use it at all.

One last question, is there any other internet security I should consider other than NIS? The only reason I uninstalled NIS because of its annoying false positives. So is there any better option? And a good one, unlike Avast, not messing with anything.
