hmm. who knew. I left the LDS church earlier this year but thought I would still be able to attend BYU. apparently I was mistaken. I'm surprised to hear that they even require non-LDS students to attend church regularly. weird. anyway... there's no point this really. any other suggestions for colleges?

Thank you for your question regarding admission. The statement you read on Part 3 is accurate regarding voluntary disaffiliation. Students who apply and are voluntarily disaffiliated from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are generally inadmissible to the university. Becoming a non-LDS student and having your name removed from the records of the church will not change how we review your application. On the front side of Part 3, the honor code states that students will ?participate regularly in church services?. This is an expectation for all students attending BYU.

You don't want to go there anyway if you aren't mormon. Go to the U or if you are looking for BYU-lite go to Utah State.
 
Another vote for the U. BYU is soooo.... ugh. Only two types of people goto BYU -- ones trying to get their MRS degree, and ones trying to find potential MRS graduates.

If you're married, morman, and want to go into a teaching or engineering career, it's a great school.

I wanted to go to byu because it's cheap, my brother's there, and it's a good college. I don't really mind the mormon environment. the u isn't quite as good as far as I know (hmm - byu: 67, univ. of utah: 117). plus the u is only like 20 minutes away from home...
 
I'm posting from my Political Science 370 - Theory of Int'l Politics class as BYU-Provo. I love it here. I moved from Hawai`i to come to BYU. Great school. If you voluntarily disaffiliated yourself from the church, you are simply inelligible to attend BYU. I don't what your gripe is. Go to the U. That's where most of the BYU rejects are anyway, or UVSC...

I'm suddenly very glad that I won't have to go to school with assholes like you.

as for "what my gripe is," I wasn't even aware that I was griping. I am kind of surprised though, mostly because I met with a byu representative earlier this year who told me that my inactivity wouldn't be a problem.

Where you graduate from means exactly zero after you get your first job. You wouldn't like BYU, at some point the mandatory religion classes, the moral code or even the stupid attitude in happy valley would drive you absolutely nuts. Lets not mention the fact that you would find very FEW women that shared interests and views with you.

I'm post-church and I went to BYU-lite (in Logan), I regret not leaving the state for college because I would have had more enjoyment and cultural exposure outside the state. The U is a good school but it's a commuter school without good social interaction. BYU-lite has great social interaction but 90% of the student body is mormon. If you want to enjoy college go out of state, if you just want an education go to the U.

I'm glad you aren't coming to BYU. I don't see why anyon who doesn't like the Mormon church, who would probably not like the people here (Mormons), would want to come to BYU. It's an LDS school! You'll be forced to live an honor code system that is based on LDS principles. It's ridiculous when students come here, and then complain about it. Like they always say, if you don't like it, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! This school is NOT for you. The BYU representative was mistaken, your inactivity IS a problem. BYU Honor Code. It's there for all to read and if you scroll down to the bottom you'll read:

BYU is an exclusive entity. They can and do choose who can enter. IF you disaffiliated yourself from the church you will not like it here.

I'm glad you know so much about me. who said I don't like mormons? my entire family and many of my friends are mormon, and I like them quite a bit. living by the honor code wouldn't be a problem. my leaving the lds church had nothing to do with disagreeing with their standards.

Then if you have no problems with Mormons, the Honor Code or the LDS standards, then why not go back to church, become active again (our whatever else your situation), get back into full faith and fellowship in the Church, get your Bishop and Stake PResidents endorsement, apply to BYU, get accepted and Go!

If your only problem is that a BYU Rep told you your inactivity wouldn't be a problem, that person was wrong. Get over it, decide to get things right and go to BYU, or just choose to go to another school.

Otherwise, like you said "...there's no point this really..."

My suggestions for other schools: U of. U (great school, cheap and in Utah, if that's where you live), Univ. of Hawaii (great place!), or Southern Virginia University ( 😉 )

umm... not having a problem with mormons doesn't mean that I want to be mormon. agreeing with their standards doesn't mean that I believe it's the one true church either.

I am curious though, what is meant by regular church attendance? sacrament meeting each week, or all three hours? are non-LDS students given callings?

thanks for the other suggestions. perhaps I was a bit harsh before. however, what I got from your post was: "BYU is great... but you can't come. ha! quit griping about it. why don't you go to the U? that's where all the rejects go, you reject." yet you say the U is a great school. hmm.

EDIT: am I correct in assuming that "participate regularly in church services" means "participate regularly in LDS church services," even for non-LDS students?
