I bought that Bytecc 5.25" USB 2.0 enclosure from Newegg for $30 the other day. I put my Lite-on DVDr in it. Doesn't work so hot. Lots of coasters plus read problems. The DVDr has worked perfectly internally since last December. My computer specs = 2.8ghz p4, 512mb ddr333, 80gb 7200rpm hdd, USB 2.0 ports. I mostly use the drive with Nero and iTunes, and also Window's built in CD burning.

Anyone have experience with optical drive enclosures? I'm wondering if it'd be worth it to invest in a Firewire enclosure. I've been wanting a 16x/dl dvdr, it'd be cool to have that in an external enclosure (my current one is 8x sl).

My Bytecc had problems as well but it has both USB/Firewire so I use the Firewire and I don't burn faster then 4X...I also have an ADS Case and it's works fine .

so there's not really any point to buying a 16x dvd burner to put in a firewire enclosure because it wouldn't burn that fast anyway?

No it should handle it but the Media is lacking and I don't trust burning that fast...to answere you question in the other thread ...I use This one and also have a Firewire800 USB combo Case Found Here

thanks for the links, they look good. I mostly want the external enclosure for making data backups on the house computers and for making ghost restore discs. the bytecc usb 2.0 stinks and isn't working out very well so far. I think what I may do is buy a 20 gig 2.5" hard drive (already have an external enclosure for one of those), save the data backups and ghost images to it, then burn what I need to DVD on my computer.

*kicks his bytecc*

I use Trays for my Ghosting and leave them off when not in use , turn the key on in boot-up and Ghost my RAID setup...I prefer that because I can copy and exchange more than 1 HD's while IDEing...hasn't failed me in 6 years...and yes my plastic Bytecc Case is cracked from me throwing it on the Floor ;)

What do you mean by Trays? Are they removable hard drives?
