Bypassing XP Upgrade "block"

Is it possible to continue with an XP "upgrade" even though the advisor says that I have incompatible hardware? I have an Abit BE6-II m/b with the HPT 366 controller which XP does not like. I've seen others mention that they are running XP on the same board using the W2K drivers. However, XP won't let me continue with the "upgrade" at all. Is the only way to get it installed to do a clean install?
