Bypassing a firewall/security thing

Hey, i live in student halls and we got pretty good internet here. 512kbps DSL connection, but its firewalled or somthing, we can play games and do everything that a normal connection can do but it just lags. There will be pauses every 5-10 seconds in online games, dosent matter if its red alert 2 or starcraft or whatever theres still lag. Ive been told its because of some kind of firewall or somthing, makes sense as i can still download things at 50-70 odd kilobytes per second. So what can i do about it?

I live in halls, i cant simply go and get DSL. I have to use the halls network to get access through the ISP they have selected.

Then getting the admins to take pity on you is about your only option. Unless of course, there is an actual problem with the network.
