Bypass media limitations

Hi,

My fiancee got me the NEC 3500A as an Xmas present. I've burned 3 discs with it so far today and it works great. Now to my problem. I bought Memorex 4X media. And I cant burn at 8X speeds. I was hoping to find a way to bypass that from nero but no lsuch luck. So now I'm wondering if I should update the firmware to some modified one or if theres any other way to bypass this.
