Good news, but I don't really care for the Sprint network right now (former customer). I'm sticking with GSM (ATT/T-mobile).

And Ting isn't really a good deal unless you get the bare minimum of data, text, and voice. If you get 500min, 1,000 texts, and 2GB of data, monthly fill is $60+ fees. Not really hot.

But it's golden if you're low-usage. Show me anywhere else I can get a plan with 100MB of data for less than $20 a month (T-mo wants $30 for 5 gigs, which is a really good deal, unless you're the person who barely uses 50MB a month). Pretty much no one else caters to low-usage as well as ting.

I'd honestly pay Straight Talk an extra $10 to have acceptable network coverage.

Straight Talk doesn't sell AT&T SIMs anymore though.

But net10 does, which is another brand from the same company. It is $5 more a month, but the refills can be bought at more locations (with discount maybe).

You get a high end phone like those, and you won't be under 100MB for very long.

I feel sorry for people who get smartphones and think they only need limited data.
What the hell do you want a smartphone for? The big pretty screen?

I have an Evo 4G with a Ting plan and only 100MB of data/month. I'm 20 days into the plan and I've only used 12MB so far.

Not everyone streams 10 gigs a month on Netflix or insane amounts of music on the go. I stay on Wifi as much as I can, and keep my music locally, along with maps. I use data mostly for directions and when I really need it, not to check Facebook every 30 seconds. For my habits 100 megs of data is just fine.

As for what I use a smartphone for? I use it as a camera, a phone, a GPS device, a tuner for my bass, a metronome, a note-taker, a flashlight, a music recorder, a web browser, an MP3 player, an eBook reader (not ideal compared to my Nexus 7, but it works), and much more. You don't need data for most of those functions, and you don't need a huge data plan to really appreciate a smartphone. My previous phone (a cheap texting slider) could do none of those tasks well.

And if you do use 10 gigs of data a month, great. Go use T-mobile or Sprint then, and be happy. Ting isn't meant for you.

I want it for the occasional times my wife and/or I need net access away from a computer, which is fairly rare, but when we need it, we need it. Even then we will probably using the phones primarily as a mobile hotspot because web browsing on a phone, even on a 5" screen, sucks in comparison to a decent tablet or laptop.

Plus, we are paying @ $120/month to Sprint right now for 2 phones when we simply don't use much data. With Ting our bill will be half that amount, at most.

Ting isn't for people who use their phone as a primary data device. It's perfect for folks like me though and I'm looking forward to 8 more days when my Sprint contract is finally up.
