Today I rid myself of Knology. They provided cable, internet and phone service for me for about a grand total of 3 months before I had enough.

Strike 1: They gave me the phone number for a internet porn company's billing department, then wanted to charge me to have it changed.

Strike 2: I kept mysteriously having a reoccurring "Past due" charge of $20.99 show up on my bill which no one could properly explain, despite having been paid multiple times, being provided documented proof of it being paid, then being told I didn't have to pay it, followed by receiving a disconnect notice for not having paid it. 🙂confused: Confused? I am...)

Strike 3: Two weeks ago, aside from random disconnects, my prime-time ping went from about 70ms to 300-400ms consistently and continuously. Latency was so bad I couldn't do any sort of streaming or gaming online pretty much at all.

So today Mediacom came, hooked me up. I'm paying about $4/mo more than what I was with Knology. Oh... that $4/mo more... yeah, includes digital cable, HD, and internet that's about 3x faster than what Knology offered. Best speedtest showed 15ms ping with 25Mbps down/1Mbps up (as opposed to the 300ms+ ping with 6Mbps (rated 8) down and 384Kbps up). Hopefully things will be smooth with Mediacom from here on out.

Mediacom is a midwestern cable company, IL/Iowa for sure, maybe others too. They are so so but all cable companies seem to be a scam.

Those are two companies that I have NEVER heard of...

It's funny, because I'm used to seeing region-wide (sometimes state-wide) cable monopolies. Where I live there are 4 different cable companies that serve about a 20 mile radius - Comcrap, Charter, Knology and Mediacom. Each has different areas, but there is some overlap here and there. Where I am, Knology and Mediacom compete. On the other end of the city it's Comcrap and Charter. Then there's AT&T in between too.

Primetime pings are in the 70's. Bandwidth is down a bit, but it's still above what my package says I'm supposed to have. Digital cable... ahh, HD channels and I get NBC in HD which for some reason Knology didn't have. I'm happy.
