BX6-R2 with C300A - my upgrade options IN ORDER TO PLAY TRIBES 2?

I have an Abit BX6-R2 motherboard now running a Celeron 300A and 192 MB of some mixed PC66/100 RAM. I could get a P3-700E in FS/FT to replace the CPU. Does this mobo support the 700's default voltage, and can I increase it in order to overclock the chip to say 133 x 7? Would I need PC133 RAM?

Or................ should I just go for a AMD combo?!

Thanks!

And yes, the ONLY reason I am upgrading is Tribes 2!

just take out the pc66 ram and overclock that mofo to 450mhz. Or u can stick in a P3 700E if u like. And yes you will need PC133 memory if u plan to OC the 700E. I just upgraded my second computer which also use to be a 300A OCed to 450 on a Abit BX6r2 to a P3 600E. I haven't gotten around to overclocking it yet until get some PC133 ram and a better HSF. I honestly can't see the performance difference though. Maybe the Voodoo3 3000 is holding it back? Oh well... at least I can put my case cover back on now. ;)

<edit>Oh, make sure you flash your bios to the latest version. That should allow you to run that chip at its correct default voltage.</edit>

How well does the P3-666 overclock? Or should I go for 700?

Thanks for all the responses!

The 666 is an "eb" chip. It is already set for 133 FSB, so it wont overclock very well at all. You want an "e" chip. It defaults to 100 FSB. Overclocking is done by running a 100 FSB chip @ 133 FSB. In the case of the PIII 700e, it is a 7 x 100 MHz chip. To overclock it to 933, you run it 7 x 133 = 933MHz. I'll caution you on this setup. Not all 700e chips will run @ 933.

Yeah, I'm definitely getting a new video card. Safest bet for Tribes 2 is probably a GeForce2 right? I can afford a GTS, but I'll also be watching Kyro II closely.

Also I have another question.. my mobo supports "AGP 66/133 MHz (Sideband) 3.3V device ". Now this is AGP2X right? Are GeForce2s AGP4X? If so.. would that translate into a slower video performance in game?

AGP 4X is basically useless, won't affect performance noticeably. A good processor (600 mhz+) and Geforce2 shouldn't have any problem running Tribes2.

So I hope :)

Get an Intellimouse Optical and a Black Ratpaz. I think that can be as important to your game play as the system CPU and GFX card.

Tribes 2 here I come!

I already have a MS Optical mouse, but what's a Black Ratpaz!?

This is what I've decided to get:

T-Bird 750@950 w/ Alpha PAL6035 fan/hs
Abit KT7A
256 Infineon RAM
GeForce2 GTS
SB Live! X-Gamer 5.1

This is what I have currently:

C300A (not overclocked!)
Abit BX6 Rev. 2
192 RAM
Voodoo3 2000
Diamond MX300

I think I'll like my new setup! :)

For the mobo I actually wanted to get the IWill KK266. But can't seem to find those in Canada :( So I'll 'settle' with the KT7A ;)

My BX6-2 has served me well. It replaced my LX6 due to the LX6's inability to provide enough juice thru the AGP port for TNT class video cards and up. First it ran my Celeron 333@358, now my PIII 600E@800, and I plan on upgrading to PIII 1Gig@??? when the price drops below $200. I'm using the Abit Slotket for the FCPGA cpus.
