Thanks to school being back in session and a lovely gas main break traffic anywhere remotely near Emory/CDC this morning was complete and utter clusterfvck. I mean gridlocked, not moving, nada....as far as I could see. A good day to take the mountain bike to work and have a good laugh at all the suckers stuck in their cars. Oh, and the weather was really nice too. :D

I wouldn't spend less than $500 if you want something worth having. You can sometimes pick up closeouts for pretty cheap, I got a $750 GT i-Drive for <$400 because it was a model year closeout.

Brand new you're looking at about $300 or more for something decent (decent = able to actually go offroad without breaking). The stuff they have in Target or similar stores is total junk. Don't bother.

From Supergo.com IIRC? They have some kickass closeout deals every now and then.

Price depends on what you need. If you want front and rear shocks you'll need to spend ~$500+, but for ~$350 you can get a capable bike with front shocks (You can buy a double shock bike for $100 but it's a piece of garbage). All but the most hardcore of people don't need rear shocks anyway unless you find them particularly comfortable. In terms of efficiency on the road you actually lose it when you have rear shocks and you can still become an expert mountain biker without them.

Yeah, but it won't give you shapely thighs and buttocks like a bike will. :p

Helecopters have pedals too, you know. ;)
Yeah, but I don't wanna hear you bitching when you have to put gas in that bad boy. ;)

Fausto, why do you ride a mountain bike instead of a road bike? Last time I checked, Atlanta wasn't particularly mountainous.

Gas? I suppose you don't have to eat? It's like the same thing!

(Oh I how I love pointless arguments! :D)

A few reasons (although Atlanta is actually pretty damn hilly)

*Better brakes (v-brakes vs. caliper brakes) and your fingers are always on/near the brake lever with flat bars if you need to stop suddenly.

*You sit up higher so you can see better.

*Fatter tires means you can bunnyhop curbs and potholes when needed

The other thing is that all my road bikes are steel but my old mountain bike is aluminum so no worries about rust if I get rained on (which is pretty often in the summer). I also put 1.5" slick tires on instead of knobbies since I'm on the road 90% of the time.

The 2004 Specialized Rockhoppers are going for $440, as opposed to $530 previously.

I have a 2003, and it's been a great bike ... I've had to replace some components because of my size ... but for most it would be kickass right out of the box.

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!! Wrong.

A gallon of gas contains approximately 31,000 calories. Cycling burns about 600 calories per hour (at 16-18 mph....which is my ususal rate when commuting) and my commute is a half hour each way. So (if I could run on gasoline) I'd be able to ride for 51 hours on a single gallon of gas which works out to 816 miles per gallon at 16mph. :D

Since I don't come in until 10, and I work about 7 miles northwest of you, it didn't bother me at all :p :)

Coming home from one of my offices the other day, had about an hour to go on the highway, and I drive by this guy on a motorcycle. We run into a rainstorm and the rain is hitting my windshield so heavy that it's just a sheet of blurry water. I good day to be driving my car and have a good laugh at all the suckers riding their bikes. ;)

Big cities are anti-productive. If everyone lived in the country and businesses were spread out horizontally rather than vertically, everywhere would be a much better place. :)
