Buzzing noise from my computer.

Sometimes my computer stars making this very irritating high frequency buzzing or whining. Somedays it can run for hours and be as silent as i want it to be, but sometimes this occurs.

I have the zalman fanmate 2 on my CPU fan and adjusting it from low to max usually stops the noise after a short delay for a hour or so. Then adjusting it again from max to low silences it again. Then back and forth, until it doesn't stop and starts to melt my brains.

However, when i put my ear 1cm away from the CPU fan when the computer is making the noise, i could say that it isn't the source.

It sound like a bad bearing in the fan. It may either be dying or just needs a drop of oil.

the sound is bouncing inside the case and i really cant tell where its coming from for sure. and the chipset fan is behind my VGA cooler.

all my fans are less than an year old

touch the fan and let it stop for a sec. If the buzzing disappears thats the one that making the buzzing sound. Thats how i found out one of my 6 month old case fan was buzzing.

sometimes you can tell the fan with the bad bearing by gently touching the blades on opposite sides and seeing if you can tilt or wobble the blades.

by opening the case you change case pressure and air flow pattern, thus the fan changes speed because the load is different.. another indication its a fan.

should i really stick a stick to the chipset fan while its running 7800rpm? is it safe? if its dodgy already will it blow up instantly?

thats not a good way to check it, thats a good way to wreck the bearings of a good fan actually. with it off see if you can wobble the blades like suggested above.

I have noticed a disturbing thing about the noise.. it has remained silent for more than a week now, but it started today again. i was copying files to my hdd, @ a rate of approximately one file per second. The noise got louder every time when one file was copied, and the filename changed on my screen.

Also, this has occurred before in a similar occasion when i was viewing some digital photos. Every time when the screen changed (when i changed the picture), the computer made this buzzing noise for a very short time. It wasnt making it constantly then, like now.

WTF is it? would a fan with bad bearings remain silent for a week?

it might be your PSU. i had a Sweex PSU in this PC, and it made a very high pitched sound. but the sound varied in tone heights, and sometimes it was completely silent (one time for 5 days), but sometimes it drove me nuts.... your problem sounds alot like it.

i replaced my GPU cooler and my CPU cooler before i found that out. (basicly started changing all fans in the PC). when i first noticed it though, i thought it was my harddrive since the sound seems to corrisond with my HD loading. might also explain why it goes away by adjusting fanmate, because you change the voltage.

in the end i just bought a new PSU from chieftec. completely silent now.

though at the shop where i bought it they also sed in the long run intel/amd stock coolers can make such noises.

thanks for the reply and new perspective . can you think of a way of making it happen for sure if its the PSU, which is buzzing? Like running prime95 will definately raise the power usage of the computer, but should that invoke the buzzing if its indeed the PSU?

I havent found a way to start the buzzing, but it always stops when i run prime95 and rthdribl in parallel. Is there a way to fix it?

And, bump..

Maybe your PSU uses a thermally dynamic fan controller, and at lower RPMs the fan makes the buzzing?

Is the PSU dying? Its less than an year old 400W nexus silent PSU. 12V1:14A 12V2:15A.

Im running 2HDs, 2 Opticals, 3500+ stock, 6800GT stock, 2 dimms, 2 case fans. shouldnt it be suffcient? and yes, it has thermal sensors. but i doubt its the PSU fan, (read the posts above).

Dude im having the exact problem with my computer, my PSU is a year old, but I just put in a new mobo and processor. Mine is wierd though, the buzzing is constant, but whenever I move the mouse, it gets louder, my mouse is optical so whenever the mouse is lit, the buzz gets worse.
