lately my system has been emitting intermittent buzzing noises. it's really soft, and seems to buzz on a regular interval. the sound is fairly high pitched, almost like cicadas, but quieter. the noise seems to originate right where the sata connectors are, but it's really hard to say for sure.

the odd part is that if i restart my computer, the noise goes away for a few hours. i think this rules out the hard drives and PSU, since those never actually shut off if i do a restart. however, the time between a restart and noises coming back seem to be getting shorter now.

motherboard is an asrock P67 extreme4. had anyone else encountered something like this before? i think it is coil whine.

Yep, a lot of people are complaining about whining caps around the cpu area on 1155 mobos. The only time I hear it personally is when my IGPU is stressed.

I've had luck engulfing it with hot glue. If you do it right, you should be able to peel it off later with a razor.

It doesn't seem to originate around the CPU socket though; it seems to come from directly above the SATA ports.

Also, why would restarting the machine temporarily fix it?
