Hi All,

Building a X58 rig with the Gigabyte EX58-UD3R mobo. Its rated speeds are DDR3 1333 and DDR3-2000. I want to do a mild overclock, so I've picked out two memory modules.

1st choice is DDR3 1333 Mem kit:

G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)

The second is DDR3-1600:
G.SKILL PI Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI

I would like to do a mild overclock of my i7-920 CPU from 2.66GHZ to maybe 3.5Ghz or so on air cooling.

1. Which RAM is better to get a mild overclock. Thinking DDR3-1600 will give me more 'headroom?'
2. If I use choice two, will the mobo automatically downgrade the speed to DDR3-1333 speeds as it officially does not support DDR3-1600?

Thanks guys. Please let me know, as I have credit card in hand ;-)

+1 this is the one to buy. Much better OC with these sticks for sure!

The second is DDR3-1600:
G.SKILL PI Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI

With the Gig UD3R only getting a 51% 5 egg
I'd probably spend a little more on MB and get something more like:
EVGA 121-BL-E756-TR LGA 1366 Intel X58 Micro ATX SLI Micro Intel Motherboard $209
EVGA 141-BL-E757-TR LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX X58 SLI LE Motherboard $219 after rebate
ASUS Rampage II GENE LGA 1366 Intel X58 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $209

or Asus latest and very nice $299
ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

The insane amount of memory dividers available takes memory speed out of the equation of overclocking. You could run DDR3-1333 and be fine overclocking, just use 2:6.

1333 will work fine on the UDR3. If the board doesn't support 1600 then don't buy 1600. If your not sure what to buy then best to wait till you know for sure. It will save you a lot of grief and some items are not refundable like memory and so money too.

I am using GSkill Ripjaws F3-12800CL8T-6GBRM on this board with no issues. I have it at 1640MHz at the same timings as the PI. Another option for you.
