buying used piano with little knowledge need advice

lol, nice way to start him off Zim Hosein...can't really go up from there. Are you looking for an upright, a grand, a baby grand, or what? Then it depends on your price range, and how much use it's going to see, what you want it for. Yamaha is making very good grands these days...my family friend got a used one a few years back for $20K.

we've got a yamaha BG piano, japanese market model, sitting at home. second BG we've had, the first one was made in the 1920s and couldn't be tuned anymore

hmmm...I think I've read about them before, but at least Steinways are decently attainable, I don't know how hard it would be to go about finding and maintaining such a unique piano. Granted, I'm sure they have people paid to fly out and work on them, like Steinway does...

Anyway, somehow I doubt that it's really what he's looking for.

What do you intend to do with the piano? Beginning student, expert composer or what? Have room for a concert grand or upright?

too bad you're not in chicago, I'd sell you my kimball studio for real cheap. great piano for learning and/or practicing.

As everyone else has said, it depends on what you want to do. If possible, get a pianist friend who you trust to go shopping with you.

I don't like Bosendorfers. They feel weird. It's all in one's taste.

do not buy the piano by yourself.
if necessary pay someone to check the piano out for you.
get someone you know..music teacher, music director at your church, anyone with
extensive piano playing experience and knowledge to help you decide if a used piano is any "good"

young chang is excellent value and sound
steinway is overpriced for what you get
baldwin is good
probably yamaha is good
if you find a particular piano..do a google search on it

remember moving the piano can require several LARGE people and some special equipment if the item is big and bulky..better measure first!
