Buying used laptop batteries a good idea?

I'm looking at upgrading the little 6 or 8 cell battery my notebook has for a 12-cell one. They're going for like 90-100 bucks new. I can snatch a "like new" one up for $35. I hear everyone complain about the age of the battery in their notebook, so I gotta ask... is buying a used laptop battery a good idea? Or would the "like new" battery's age make it last as long as my newer 6 or 8 cell battery... thereby wasting my time and missing the point entirely?

i certainly wouldnt buy one.
batteries are only able to hold their charge for so long, and who knows how much a used one has been used.

Is it that they don't fully recharge after they are old? Or that they burn through the life quicker? Because there is a picture of someone pressing the power meter on the back of it and it's lit up to 100%....

i've always heard that the older they get, the less charge they can hold. it all depends on the use though. primary concern is how much its been charged, drained, charged, drained etc. i think thats what wears the battery out.

Nasty but it still works just as well? Roger that. I can deal with a little plaque on my battery to save 60 bucks!
