Unless you can get one super cheap or from a trusted friend, it isn't worth the risk. If it is a pre-Jasper Xbox, it will RROD at some point. Additionally, used ones might be banned on Xbox Live, meaning you can't play online.

Agreed. I personally wouldn't even bother with a used 360 unless it was of the newer case design. Too many issues with buying an older used model to make it worth the while.

A new Xbox 360 S Arcade is $199 now. Gamestop is offering free games with them for Black Friday too.

Do you have a decent gaming PC? Might be no need to get a 360 at all unless you really want to play Halo, Gears of War, and Forza.

Only the RROD has a 3-year warranty. If the DVD drive or anything else goes out it costs $99 to fix (still better than the PS3 $149 though).

With a used 360, besides the risk of it being banned the owner might have played games from disc instead of installing to the HD (playing from HD was only added last year?) so the $99 DVD drive might be about to die.

One of my Xboxes has a dead DVD drive and I have been debating what to do. Replacing it myself would only cost about $25, but I'd void the RROD warranty. This is one of the refurbed Xboxes and I'm afraid if I pay the $99 to have it fixed, I'll just receive another refurbed piece of junk where the DVD will croak in it after 90 days.

Fortunately it is only used as a media streaming device, but it still angers me.

My first xbox 360 was used. It was 9 months old. It RRoD'd 3 days after I bought it. I was pissed, so I shook the hell out it from my anger like a British Nanny would. It magically worked again. So I sold it on craigslist the next day. Never again.

The warranty isn't transferrable either I don't think.
