I'm not too much of a DFI fan, but I don't intend on overclocking too much. I'm just hoping the setup for the rig doesn't have any problems. They all look they'll work together.

EDIT: Should I hold back on the ram since I have spare ram in the rig I'm using now and go for the 7800GTX?

Same thing for school projects / homework questions. It's our nature!!!

Well I asked for opinions before but this is a revision to what I had in the pretense so I decided to get opinions before thinking about getting stuff. 😉

DelD (or anyone for that matter), do you think the CPU / cooling will be worth the extra 50-60 bucks for a heatsink? Basically, is it really worth using over the one in the AMD retial box?

Oh and Druid, I just purchased a similair system and ended up going with the EpoX 9nPA + ultra, seems like a good deal and has had good reviews but I guess I wont really know till I plug it in. (105 at NewEGg)

Fatal1ty is a marketing ploy, using a geek who thinks he's a gangster as a figure head, and upping the prices along the way. Which heatsink exactly were you looking at?

If buying the system from Monarch then the Zalman hsf that Monarch offers in their configurator is the better IMO. Its quieter than the stock retail hsf and will run a little cooler. If you plan to overclock that proc more than 2.4 I would strongly reccomend a bigger/better third party hsf though. Monarch has them and will sell them but they wont install them due to potential shipping problems. The bigger/better hsf can easily get knocked/broke off during shipping so Monarch wisely refuses to ship them installed.

Why Opteron 165? Isn't Mhz more important than L2 cache?

Edit: I didn't buy yet. Now I'm choosing between the opteron and the X2. And if I do order that what heatsink should I get?

Get the Opteron 165 retail package and use the heatsink it comes with. It will dust the 3800+.

What about a monitor? You should check out Dell if you haven't got one yet. The 2005FPW and 2405FPW are both very nice and are a very good value.

Well the retail box costs like $359 while the X2 is $320 i could get the OEM from monarch while also getting a better HSF than the stock one it comes with. I was looking at the Scythe Kamakiri, Zalman CNPS9500 LED CPU Cooler(the one thats like sideways), Nexus AOP-6400, and Zalman CNPS7700-Cu CPU Cooler. ANY OPINIONS?!?!
Edit: The Retail for the OEM is $270

I would guess that a 165 overclocked on the stock cooler would be faster than a 3800+ overclocked on high-end air cooling.

$40 isn't alot to pay for 1mb of L2 cache. 🙂

GET THE 165!! 😉

The two heat sinks linked in my earlier posts work well, I know since I bought both of them for the two machines I am building. They are better than the retail heat sinks and really not costing that much more, $15 - $20 depending on which one you get.

Also if you are going to OC using the ASUS A8N-E, there is a post here that will come in very handy. Scroll down to the bottom and look at JustAnAverageGuy suggestions. I used them with no problems. (There is a HTT limitation with the ASUS A8N-E of about 240 or 245, it gave me fits for awhile until JustAnAverageGuy posted his settings) BTW - his setting are from the Premium version of the A8N-E so they are not going to look exactly the same, but are close enough to get you started in the right direction.

Take care,

Del D

Thanks for your opinions. I went and ordered the 165 from monarch along with the Zalman heatsink DelD showed me. Somehow I actually saved $18 though probably from Newegg taxes since I live in Jersey
