Buying today or tommorow, DVD burner question

Hi all, thanks to this great forum and members, I will be building a new rig in the next day or 2. Wife gave approval this morning 😀

I was set on a NEC 2510a, but Newegg is out of stock with the ones with Roxio. They have a NEC 3500, but they ship with no software.

When this thing arrives, I want to start backing up my DVD's before the kids eat, lose, or scratch more.

I heard LiteOn sucks at DVD burners, Plextor is expensive. What to get?

So what's the best way to get a good dual layer, DVD burner with Nero? Is Nero that good? What is a guy to do? Budget set between 60 and 100 bucks, although the cheaper the better.

I have nero% version 5.5.3.2 OEM from a cd burner. Would this burn DVD's?

Use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD's, DVDshrink to resize them(where needed) and then DVD Decrypter again to burn them. This WILL work without any other burning software. I have the 3500 and have backed up quite a few DVDs without a coaster yet. Good luck,

Arz

This is what a quick search on half.com turned up...

I don't know about 5.5.3.2 though...You should just try to install it and see if it has support.

Edit: Oh, and if you are just looking to backup DVDs and not burn DVDRs w/ data on them you could definately just follow Arzon's way.

Btw, Arzon...why do you have to use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD when DVD Shrink's whole purpose is to do that? Couldn't you just rip with DVD Shrink *Which automatically decompresses it for you* then burn with DVD Decrypter?

1. Buy an NEC 16x DL or a Pioneer 16x DL
2. Buy Nero 6 Ultra Edition
3. ?
4. Profit!

Pioneer DVR-108 is a great burner and is only $80.00 at Newegg

OEM though, no software included.

Marc

That's the one I just got a week or two ago. Awesome drive, I love it!

Don't let included software dictate your decision on buying a good DVD burner.
By a good DVD burner then get the software.
I'm using the Pioneer DVR 108 and Nero,both bought seperately,no problems,good stuff 🙂

That's exactly what I did. Windows XP Pro recognized the 108 without a hitch. I usually use Windows XP for burning CDs, using the drag-and-drop folder method, and iTunes for burning music CDs, and then Nero for burning DVDs.

I wish Windows had drag-and-drop DVD burning too...

I have the pioneer DVR-107 and I love it. Using it with Nero Express and never had any problems.

Same here, except I have a Plextor 712A. If you're not into dual layer burning yet (who cares right now with the price of the media! :Q ), the Plextor is about as good as it gets. Pick up a retail version of Nero and you are golden for a long time.

Also:

Use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD's, DVDshrink to resize them(where needed) and then DVD Decrypter again to burn them.
This works just as well. 🙂

My lite-on combo SOHC-5232K works just great, NO problems, but so does my Kenwood true-X 52X cd rom drive, go figger. Heh, my dog hears some weird stuff coming out of my case tho, a guy can't have it all I guess. Could it be that my Lite-on and Kenwood have some sort of frequency beating thing going on ?

Good choice w/ the Nec 3500a ..

1 - download DVDShrink . It does it all (rip, copy, burn) for 99.9% of all dvd's.
2 - Buy Nero6 Ultra . For everything else.
3 - down load Dvd Decrypter to create an image of those pesky dvd's that don't have a standard file layout. (very few) then use dvd decrypter to burn the iso image.

Getting a second dvd drive is nice, so that you won't have to swap out the source dvd w/ the blank dvd-r.

Regards,
Jose

Lite On do NOT suck, they are the best drives out there IMHO

Maybe for CDRW but for DVDRW lite-on drive sucks hairy donkey balls.

Ya my Lite On 411s sucks creating tons of coasters even with good media like ritek G04s.
On average every 2 out of three burns go bad.
I've concluded that it must be the drive as I have replaced motherboards and other parts, windows installs, used different software, over time since I have had that drive.

I'm running a 12x lite-on with no issues, I do have the latest firmware however. Not a coaster yet out of about 40-50 burns using verbatim media
