Buying suggestions?

Hello, I recently purchased a 18.2gb 10k rpm Seagate Cheetah 18LP fiber channel drive for $28. I was wondering where I can locate a cheap controller for this drive, or suggestions on what to do with this thing!

Makes a nice, hi-tech paper weight... 😉 I doubt you're going to want to buy a $200. plus, fiber channel host adapter to run a $20. drive. One should only buy either 68-pin or SCA for use on desktop PCs. I would suggest cancelling the order post haste!

I'm guessing that most of the fiber channel Host Adapters (never say "controller" when talking SCSI - the controllers are in the devices) are designed for mainframe and mini servers and may not work in normal PCI slots but here are some sources for you to check:

hypermicro.com (may offer free ground shipping if you mention www.storagereview.com - check the SR site for the latest offer)
centrix-intl.com
pc-pitstop.com (offers PayPal as a payment option)
scsi4me.com (ditto)
etech4sale.com
and I can usually find stuff for low bucks on eBay.

IAC, you better study up before tossing out any more $$$ on SCSI. Lots of good info here: http://www.scsifaq.org . You're not in Kansas any more, Dorothy...

I think your SOL, those are use to connect to SAN arrays.. I have FC cards you can have but they're useless, since they won't connect to your drive directly.

What you need is:
1- an LSI single channel U160 host adapter ~$40 at newegg.

2- an LVD cable with active terminator <$10. from scsi4me.

3- One or more 68-pin (easiest to deal with but usually a bit more expensive than the SCA version of the same drive) or SCA (80-pin) 10k U160 LVD drive (can be U320 if you want - drives and host adapters are backward compatible).

4- and, if you get an SCA drive) an LVD rated 68-to-80pin adapter (hypermicro includes an adapter with their SCA drives).

Plus as I said above, you need to go to scsifaq.org and learn up on scsi... He helps those who help themselves.
