When you buy something that comes with a free lets say 20 dollar gift card, does that mean you think that you bought an item for 20 dollars less? For example, let's say you buy a game for $60, but it comes with a free $20 gift card, do you think that you got it for $40?

It depends on where it's at. If i buy an xbox at walmart for 200 and it comes with a 50 giftcard, i consider it 150 because i do my grocery shopping there and will spend the giftcard in a few days anyways.

Now if it's somewhere else, like bestbuy or amazon, when i don't know when i'll shop there again, then no, i dont consider it to be cheaper.

well i have been buying games at amazon lately that usually have $20 GC with them, so that means every game i purchase there on after the first one does in fact actually cost me $40.

Because WalMart doesn't carry all the same name brands as any other grocery?

edit: as to the OP, if it's a store where I shop with any regularity I do count it as a discount, since I know I'll get the money back.

I get the same shit there as I did from Kroger and save about $30-40 every two weeks. I've never understood what everyone has against walmart. I could care less that they treat their employees like shit and drive out small businesses, its not my problem and as long as I'm getting good deals... fuck it.

Tastes fine to me and my family, and that's all that really matters. If other's don't like it, that's cool. Honestly, I've shopped for meat and produce at Whole Foods, Kroger, Country Mart, and Wal Mart, can't tell the difference except for the price. If the only difference that I can tell is price, i'm going with the cheaper. Not worried about organic, so i get the most bang for my buck.

Depends on how "liquid" the gift card is. If the card is from amazon, walmart, target, or any number of stores that people frequently visit, then sure.

Yes, but my problem is double counting that card in my head. When I buy a game from Amazon and it comes with a $20 credit, so I think that game cost me $40. But then when I apply that card on another game (say with no credit) then that game looks like it also cost me $40. In reality the latter is more accurate since in that case I actually only spent $40.

No. I count the NEXT item I buy with that gift card as $20 cheaper. Otherwise you could accidently overcount the savings (like gorcorps posted). Or, maybe you lose the gift card, or it expires, or fees eat up the savings, etc. I don't count my chickens until they've hatched.

Depends on the gift card and the store. Most of the time, the deals that are for low value store gift cards are pointless, because the value of the card isn't enough to buy something outright and the store is simply using it as a driver to get you to come back and spend more cash.

The only produce I buy at WalMart is some fruit; it's hard to screw up apples, bananas and melons. I get some meats at the deli counter (Prima Della isn't Boar's Head, but it's still good stuff) but any raw meats and other produce I buy at a different store. In another few weeks all my produce will come from local roadside stands.
Buying general dry goods, canned goods, condiments, etc. at WalMart can save a goodly chunk of change and I'm getting the same brands sold at the other stores I frequent.

Sadly it is that attitude by the selfish generation of Americans that is going to ruin this country. People don't care about supporting anything local and they don't care about anyone else. Why is all our tech support going to India? All our manufacturing going to China? It's b/c people don't think long term and don't give a $hit about anything but saving themselves a few bucks.

But I agree with your response to the OP

I consider it as getting $80 worth of items for $60.

However, I could also say it cost me $40 for the game but when I go use the $20 GC, I consider it as paying full price. In the end, it's all the same, just a matter of personal preference on which item you choose to discount.
