Buying some G-Skill RAM

First, the motherboard I'm going to be using is the Gigabyte P55A-UD3 with an i5 750.

For a new system build I was looking at 8 gigs of DDR3 1600 G-Skill RAM. I was thinking about 2x4GB sticks for OCing but I can get 4x2GB sticks for about $120 less so I think I'll go for that instead since I can still run dual channel.

Looking at newegg.ca, I can either buy the G-Skill Pi series in 4x2GB CAS 6 (6-8-6-24) for $250 CAD or G-Skill Ripjaws 4x2GB CAS 7 (7-8-7-24) for $270. I'm wondering two things:

1) whether going that low in latency if it'll be worth the extra $20

2) I've heard of people having good luck OCing with the Ripjaws but I'm unsure about the Pi series. Opinions?

What is this for? Most daily consumers don't need more than 4gb of memory, and messing with the timings/OC isn't worth the hassle as you'll only see minimal increases in performance. If you are that daily consumer, pick the cheapest kit from G.Skill. The prices for memory are abso-freakin-lutely ridiculous (I bought my DDR2 @ $49.99 for 2x2GB).

I'm going to be gaming (getting a Radeon 5870) as well as programming in Matlab and FORTRAN. Gonna be doing some HTPC stuff as well.

You'd have to do some benchmarking, but I don't think you'd see any improvement on performance by either overclocking or timing adjustment. Going over 4GB might only give you a marginal benefit as well.

I figured 8GB would be a bit of overkill but I was worried that 4GB would be too little. And with a P55 chipset there really is no in between without sacrificing dual channel. I guess since I can now buy 2x2GB for $140 vs. 4x2GB for $270 right now, I could always buy the 4GB kit and then upgrade if necessary later on, incurring very little extra cost.

Go ahead and order that 4Gb. I game and it is plenty for gaming. Been using my Gskill for about 3 yrs now..
