I have a very old 22 inch Dell 1680x1050 monitor. I want to get another monitor to pair with it for office work (spreadsheets, email, web surfing, PDF viewing, etc.). Should I try and get another 22 inch 1680x1050 monitor? Or is it OK to get a 1080p monitor to match it? Just wondering for ease of use as I sometimes drag windows between the screens.

I run a 4K 28" & a 1440P 27" (formerly 1080p 24") and you can adjust the positioning in Windows so you can easier move between displays based on physical position. There is some dead zone but you soon adapt and it is not an issue. There is always Windows + Shift + Arrow keys to move windows across displays.

You don't need to match. The most important thing is to keep the pixel density the same. If you don't things will be too big or too small on one of your screens.

You can throw any old pair of monitors together and they will work.

As @Spiritwalker22 indicated, pixel density differances will be obvious. But they will still work.
