I think refurbished units provide good value, and I try to buy refurb when I can. So far I haven't had any problems with any of the refurb electronics I have purchased. But my luck seems to have run out.
I recently purchased a refurbished Onkyo TX-SR876 receiver from shoponkyo.com (which is Onkyo's own outlet site). The first receiver I received was defective with the two rear surround channels not working. The fact that the firmware wasn't even updated (Onkyo's support CSR told me they update firmwares to the latest one for all refurb components) makes me think that the first AVR I got wasn't even refurbished by Onkyo. They just repackaged a defective unit as refurb and sold it.
Onkyo would not let me drive the unit to their warehouse, which is an hour away from me. Nor would they send me a shipping label so that I can ship it out at my convenience. They would only allow Fedex home pickup with required me to stay home from work, twice. So after much hassle, I finally received a replacement today - almost 3 weeks after I received the original defective AVR. In all this time, contacting Onkyo has been nothing but a pain in my ass - every time I call, I get put on lengthy hold and sometimes even hung up on. Their customer service is piss poor to say the least.
Well as it turns out, the replacement I got is defective as well. The front flap is jammed shut. I didnt even bother with powering on the unit to see if it works.
Now at this point, what would you do? Return the AVR, get a refund, and move onto another brand (which will end up costing me nearly 2x as much). Or set up another RMA hoping for better luck the 3rd time around? I'm in no rush because this receiver will go in my basement media room and that room is not ready yet.
Sadly, I really like this receiver and I got a pretty good price on it.
