I've a question for you worldly folks. When I go to Kohls or Macy's to pick up some slacks, how come they never seem to get shorter than 29 long? There's plenty of variation for the width, but the length is always too long.

Are all Americans really so tall?

Buy online for more size variety.

I'm at minimum 36 long and have trouble finding pants that long. I could equally say "are Americans so short?"....

I usually go to the store, find a design I like, and order it online.

Apparently 6' isn't what they have in mind when they design clothes.

As an American clothing retailer, I can tell you that requiring a 29 length is somewhat uncommon and shorter than that is extremely rare. Our highest volume sales are 32-34 with 36 being relatively common and 38 being somewhat uncommon.

Rather than being purely because Americans are taller I think a lot of it is the trend of having a bit of "stack" or excess pantsleg sitting slouched atop the shoes being prevalent.

I wear 30 or 32 depending on style, but I'm not really tall at all (5'10.5). So I think most pants are made for the average.

I'm a 31"and will often fit between 32's or 30's but just buy 32's and have them hemmed since pants are always a little different anyway.

As a shorter than average person, I always have to hem my pants. I've learned to sew much better and I've found a good tailor.

You can find a local tailor and pay $10 or more to hem them. Or have someone you know that is handy with a sewing machine do them. Or buy from a store like Land's End .. They have a very good selection of reasonably priced clothes, which do wear pretty well. And they will hem your trousers at no cost to you (with or without cuffs)

Also, keep in mind some people wear their pants at their waist, and some people at their hips and some same above their belly button... it's quite varied.

I have trouble finding pants that are size 44 waist and 32 length, most places only go up to 38 or 42 :(
