Buying non AIB NVidia cards?

Can you even get a normal NVidia card that is not made by an Add In Board Partener? All I seem to find are ASUS, Chaintech, BFG, EVGA, Verto, etc. No Built By NVidia cards.

heheh i have a built by nvidia gf3 ti200

came in a dell system

passively cooled....one hot mutha!!!

shockingly hot infact

asus are crazy with their cards at the min i mean a 6800NU with 256mb of DDR3 and then a 6800gt with only DDR1 whats that all about

Nvidia does not make their own cards except as noted, Dell and a couple review boards.

After the STB/3DFX fiasco, they wont make that mistake.

Also ask the Ati partners how they were shafted on chips until Ati had enough for thei own boards.

But when you see pictures of the cards in magazines when they are reviewing them. The lable says Nvidia. Not any AIB Partener name.

I was under the impression that all 6800 series cards at the moment were built by nVIDIA and simply rebranded and/or modified with a different cooler by the AIB partners. The exception to this is Asus, who somehow manages to build their own (expensive) varieties of both nVIDIA and ATi boards. I know that my eVGA 6800GT doesn't have "eVGA" printed anywhere on the PCB, but has a sticker with all eVGA specific info, such as model and serial numbers.

Aye, just the chips

Only ATI makes both chip and card (excluding other smaller manufacturers e.g. Matrox).

I have the same question. Another example is the 9800 Pro having GDDR2 while the 9800 XT had DDR.

They are just using the reference design AFAIK. Doesnt mean Nv built them.

I was under the impression that Nv builds the first batch for all their partners for quality control purposes, then the next batch are built by the partners. ex: BFG now has their shiny cooler, but the first round used the default reference design.

Nawww the 9800XT does not use GDD3 ram. It uses teh same ram what comes with the 9800Pro and the 9800 pro 256MB. I think its only ddr ram if that. Remember the 9800 series is old and i doubt that they would have complete redeon teh artichtrue of the card jsut for teh 9800xt, waste of R&D money

I dunno

Don't know many DDR chips (if any) that utilize BGA packaging.

P.S. The 9800 series was also released last year so it must've been @ least up to GDDR2 by then.

I think they are both gddr2 type ram. I know the 5800 was the first to have gddr2 ram, and the 9800 was after so i'm just assuming based on that

nope 9800xt is just ddr, check the ati site about the specifications of the 9800xt. It only says DDR1, i am sure if it was gddr2 or gddr3 they would be more htan happy to gloat the hell out of that spec. So only ddr1
