This comes to a total of $1664, I don't need a tripod at this time for my purposes, but I do need a bag. I would preferably like a small bag that I could fit both those lenses (or maybe just one at a time, but both fit separately) and then also fit into a backpack, or sports bag.

Please give me critiques, opinions, comments. Thank you.

Well you can't go wrong with your camera... and those lenses are both good lenses for the money. Everything I see looks good. You will probably like the Tamron a hell of a lot better than the Nikon f4.5 200mm.

GET THE KIT LENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is more then worth it
the Tamron 29-75 is a good lens but 28mm will get you a 42mm focal length because of the 1.5x crop factor, now you may not think you will need anything wider, but i can gaurentewe you will be kicking yourself for not getting it

I have the kit lens and the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and I never use it on the D70 because its not wide enough

thet 80-200 is nice but i woudl get the Nikon 70-300 ED or the Sigma 70-300 APO super Macro 2, they give you more range and take great pics, the sigma also gives you macro mode between 200-300mm

filters seem fine, i use a UV filter for lens prtection on all my lenses, polarizers are nice but less needed in digital because you can do the same thing in photoshop

CF card is good as well, you shoudl be able to get 18 shots in Large Jpeg mode off before the buffer slows down with it

do you need a second battery? you get like 800 shots on a full charge on the one that comes with it

For sports I would look at getting a faster telephoto lens, something like the Nikon 80-200 F2.8 (a new one is probably out of your budget, but you can probably find a used one for a reasonable price).

I agree with Anubis, go with the kit lens. For about the same price, you get an AF-S lens which will give you much faster focusing, plus a more useful wide angle (the kit lens will be equivalent to a 24-135 zoom on the D70).

The second battery is probably not necessary - the D70 has great battery life.

For a bag, I would wait until after you get the camera & lenses, then look at your local camera shop for something that everything will fit in (and then buy it for less on ebay!).

What kind of shots are you taking? That 80-200mm lens may be a little extreme. For a general purpose lens, people typically look for something in the 18/28-80/135mm range. Don't forget to take weight into consideration.

As for filters, I personally prefer B+W. The UV filter is great for basic, everyday protection of your lens. I've played with a polarizer and ended up not being pleased with the results.

Here's the equipment I'm likely to purchase:

Canon EOS 20D, Body Only ($1499.95)

WITH

Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephot...tofocus Lens ($229.95)

+

B+W 58mm UV Haze 010 Glass Filter ($19.50)

OR

Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephot...tofocus Lens ($409.95)

+

Canon 72mm Haze UV-1 Glass Filter ($24.95)

GT: that all looks good as well but ill say the same to you. YOU WILL REALLY MISS THE WIDE ANGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

28mm on canons 1.6x crop is 45mm, if you are used to a [point and shoot digital, which tuypically have a 20mm lens on the wide end you will really be missing that
i shoot between 18-24mm on the D70 all the time and im prob gonna get a 12-24 lens as well

Yeah, I'd get the kit lens as well just 'cause its a cheap wide-angle one. I'd also invest in a flash. The built-in one is not going to be very useful.

actually the D70s internal flash isnt that bad at all, but getting a SB-600 or Sb-800 would be much better

Is it compatible with telephoto lens? (not that it has the range to cover it)

I am use to my Canon Powershot G2, which is 34-102mm.

I am also considering Canon's new EF-S IS lens at 17-85mm, but it's nutz expensive: $599.95. Then again, if I go THAT expensive, why not also consider Canon's EF 17-40mm L USM lens for $679.95!!!

😀

 I very much agree. For the price of the filters you are going to buy and the slack in your budget you could get an SB-600 ($249 I think). I guarantee you will find a good flash much more useful than those filters.

600$ isnt that bad i dropped that on the 105mm f/2.8 Macro like 2 months ago, the 12-24 is around 800$ i beleive

you could get that 10-20mm one that they just announced or whatever it was, its supposed to be cheaper IIRC

I agree he could save by not buying the polarizer and step-up ring. I do think UV filters are good for basic protection of the lens for little money.

Heh. Not quite. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM SLR Lens costs $799.99.

1. get the kit lens, it is worth way more than what you pay for it when you get it with the body
2. get a good, comfortable bag to protect it so you wont hesitate to take it with you d70 bags
3. flash prices are dropping like crazy so check out the deal sites before you buy
4. start browsing the DPreview D70 Forums for good tips on techniques and gear.

enjoy, and welcome to the D70 club!

o wow i didnt realize it cost that much, i guess if you want really wide thats how you gotta do it

however you coudl get the Sigma 12-14 on a canon mount its still 650$ tho

Sorry, but I want more telephoto capability than that. And as good as that 17-85mm EF-S lens might be, I am hesitant to buy an EF-S because it's compatible only with two cameras at the moment: 300D and 20D. An EF lens would be a better investment. For the moment, I'm going to stick with the two I mentioned in my 10:36 AM post.

But you bring up a valid point. With my G2, I am use to 34-102mm, but if I bought that 28-105mm Canon lens, it would be like having a 45-168mm lens with the 1.6 crop factor.

I agree with Anubis on the second battery. You don't need it.

I took my D70 on my last hiking trip to the Tetons. It lasted 4 days with no problem, including 2GB of pictures and me accidentally leaving the power on all the time. It is not like other camera batteries because you barely use the LCD.

yea it lasts forever, the camera also has the power down mode like the film cameras also have, so you can basically leave it on and it goes to sleep after a min or so

a second battery is good to have if you are dooing a shoot and are afarid of it running out, but untill then you can do without it

also where are you getting it for 17$? all the places i saw selling them had them at like 40$

GT: my oly 720 UZ is 6.4-51mm its so wide to bad i cant afford or find the 6mm fisheye that nikon made back in the 80s, 220 degree FOV

ebay has all kinds of generic knock-off's for cheap.

i have a couple of them ($20 shipped) that i keep around in case the one that came with the camera dies. i just use the replacements until i can recharge the main pack. for the price, you cant beat the piece of mind.

so the Tamron can't do close up shots very well?? and how close is close?

I figure the Tamron > Kit Lens because it's F2.8.

It's really highly reviewed everywhere.

did i say it couldent do closeups?

its minamum focus distance is 13inches at all focal ranges and can do 1:4 magnification at 75mm that will get you close, closer then the it lens IIRC whihc is like 14inches and 1:6

BUT the Kit lens gives you a MUCH MUCH wider field of view 18mm vs 28mm or 28mm vs 45mm after the crop factor

the sigma will give you a 1:2 magnification in macro mode and will do 1:1 with the adapter

and it also gives you some sweet 300mm (450 after crop) zoom action
