That's the way it always works. There are almost always price cuts for the existing CPUs when a new CPU is introduced and the new high end CPU should cost the same as the old high end CPU. Intel, for example, has for the last couple of years always introduced it's new CPUs (with the exception of the Extreme Edition) at $637 although this has recently dropped to $417 with the Prescott.
The Prescott already has the 64-bit extensions but they are still disabled. I read somewhere that Intel plans to activate them this Fall, if I remember correctly.

Wow I didn't think it coming out for awhile. Are you sure it wasn't June 1st, 2005, because i didn't see anything on AMD's website. You'd think you would be able to preorder it. Thanks for the advice.

The 939 pin AMD cpu's will be out shortly.

No matter what you decide to buy, there are several places online that give exceptional pricing.
I bought just about all my hardware at NewEgg.

I build systems as a second income. My Credit Union finances my pc's to it's members.
I've spent a lot of money at NewEgg and never had a problem.

When you do decide to buy, post again and ask the forum here about the components. I'm sure we'll see you off to a good start.

Just to agree (and add to) with what other peoples have been saying

Wait for the 939 A64 FX machines.
Wait for PEG motherboards/graphics cards
Get 2 10k Raptor 74gb in RAID 0
Get yourself plenty of (fast) RAM from a good manufactor (Corsair, OCZ, Mushkin)
If you want a TFT for gaming ENSURE the response time is less that 16ms - 12ms is preferable
And if you dare and have the time/cash - get a water cooling set up - and overclock the life out of those new FXs *drools*
Try to avoid XP Home/Pro. If you are waiting for the 939s etc XP 64 will probebly be out, so buy that. If not stick with 2k - it might be more expensive but it is worth every penny. And yes - i do mean for gaming.

Awesome, when i read the the FX-57 wouldn't be out till next year I figured the 55 must still be aways off, fortuantly i was mistaken.

Anyways I have an old P2 based system laying around and would like to upgrade this to practice for when i build my own computer later. This is kind of a dumb queston but, I'd like to upgrade but I'm not sure on the exact specs of the system, i ran msinfo32 but what I couldn't find, and really need to know, what the motherboard is. How would I find this?

What I'm thinking of upgrading to is an older CPU i can get cheap (i.e. P3). I'm planning on mainly using this system as a spare and for LAN games with my brother.

Thanks.

PS Sorry for spelling I was in a rush to go eat dinner.

I concur with the sentiments about building your own computer.

If you've already upgraded RAM, swapped drives, video cards, intstalled drivers, etc. then you are have pretty much already built your own PC, just not all at once.

The most time consuming (IMO) part is installing the O/S.

I will be building my own comp in december, but if you can, I encourage you to wait a month or so to see how the socket 939 stuff shakes out. It may give you some additional choices, or it may just lower the prices on what you are already planning on getting (pretty much what others have said).

I don't know how much you can upgrade the P2 machine, but perhaps you can just do a processor swap and go to a higher clocked one. Maybe you could find some old RAM to add as well.

For your new computer, you really just need to decide for yourself if the FX series is worth the price over the standard A64 series (or P4 is you go that route). I personally don't want to spend more than $350 on a new processor, so I hope there will be a low end socket 939 available in that price range (so a couple years down the road I can upgrade just the CPU and get more speed).

If I were YOU building my computer now (where money is not as much of an issue), I would get the following:
CASE: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-163-019&depa=1
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-426&depa=1
PSU: http://www.svc.com/se40sutoacpf.html
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-896&depa=1
DVD-RW: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-935&depa=0
MB: Actually, I'm still not sure which Mobo I would use.
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-160&depa=1
Video: Well, I like the 6800GT which isn't out yet, but the X800Pro is also a fantastic choice.

Maybe throw in another 120mm case fan for the back and a floppy and you are good to go.
I went with the standard A64 because I have a hard time justifying almost 2X the price for only slightly more speed (ahtough, maybe you can make the same argument about going from an A64 3000 to 3400).

-D'oh!

Computex starts on June 1st and Anandtech's Kristopher Kubicki actually stated in forum post that AMD will launch the new socket 939 on June 1st. Take a look at this post. It's a month old but I don't think the date has changed.

I found my the old P2's motherboard is a Intel SE440BX.

According to Intel I can't upgrade this beyond a P3 450mhz.

Would it be possible to put something faster and I'd just be taking a risk or would it just not work.

I'm also wondering what's the deal with PCI express, if I'm going to already wait for Socket 939 should i also wait for PCI express?
