Hey, I think I finally about to cave and get a new HDD as well as an SSD.
Currently I've got a 4-5yr old Samsung 7200 RPM 500gb HDD, (see it here - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152181) which I THINK might be crappin out. My system will restart itself once or twice when booting up and occasionally BSOD randomly. Either way, I could use more storage and wouldn't mind faster boot/load times.

So I'm thinking of either a 1TB or 2TB HDD, depending on price. I've heard a lot about the WD series, like Red/Black/Green etc. but not sure what I should get. The HDD will just be for storing all kinds of stuff - games/music/videos/applications/whatever.

I want an SSD for putting Win7 on and maybe a few apps, primarily MS Office and maybe a game or two. So I was thinking probably a ~120 GB one. Now I know little to nothing about SSDs truly - never had one. So I don't know what makes one good and one bad...I was looking at the Samsung 840's but then I saw a thread on here today saying that they are dying a lot?

I don't have a lot of money to throw at this... I was looking at the $100 Samsung 840 120 GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147188) and around an ~$80 1TB drive or so...

any input/advice/opinions? Would appreciate it

There seemed to be a firmware bug causing some to go down. It should be fixed, apparently.

As to HDD, a 7200 RPM 1TB platter drive, such as the new Barracudas and Caviar Blues, will be better than a 5400 or 5900 RPM drive, such as a Green, Red, or their equivalents, when you care about accessing many files from the drive, such as the first time some game loads. WD Blacks basically get you a longer warranty (the added performance has never been that much, and with an SSD as your main drive, really won't matter).

Hmm the WD Blue 1TB is on sale for $65 at the moment. The 840 120GB is $100 so that'd be $165...not bad.

That is a pretty good deal, thanks for the heads up!

I've heard from some owners of the 120GB 840 that it's pretty good. Some have recommended going for either the 250 840 or the Pro 840 120GB SSD...From what I can tell the only area the Pro is superior in is sequential write, which I think is for moving large files? I don't do any video editing or anything of that nature so I don't know that I'd benefit from it too much

The 840 Pro also uses a different type of NAND vs the standard 840. I wouldn't hesitate to buy either one.

I went with the 128GB 840, not the Pro though.

Here's a cap of the AS SSD results, are they pretty normal?

So far I like it. The SATA connector on the SSD is kind of loose, not sure why. But Windows installed quick, boots up very quick, and everything is pretty snappy. Just have to figure out how to manage programs and stuff so I don't fill it up with crap
