Buying new PC, for upgrade...

I'm going to be upgrading, plan on buying a PC from HP through OfficeDepot (business account). But will they sell me one WITHOUT an OS. I plan on using the exsisting 2000pro, just swaping out the new hardrives and putting in the current ones into the new box.

Anyone know if this is possible, or can I get the lisence for xp and put it on another machine I build later.

I doubt they'd sell you one without a OS - just reformat your HDD once you get it. It's just HP/proprietary manufacturers - never seen an HP sold without OS on it.

Just get the machine and reload the old OS once you transfer the harddrives (You will have to reload the OS). The new machine will have valid XP license that can be used to load the OS on any other machine). As long the the license has not been activated with M$ you are good to go.

I will have to RELOAD the OS? Was hoping NOT to. The pc has ALOT of setting and tweaks and so forth that the current user doesn't want to have to re-set-up. I updated her PC with 2000pro from 98 within the past year. I just installed a new HD with pre-installed OS from company headquarters and slaved the old to keep stored files. Of course she likes "how things are". but wants it to go faster...

So we have $$ to spend before end of year, and need upgrade - currently 233 mhz pentium compaq, pc-100 ram and its kinda slow.

Unless the mobo's are the same (or VERY similar) the problem will that the old HD's have the mobo chipset drivers from the old system. That will cause probs when installed into the system with the new mobo. The old chipset drivers will not work with the new mobo (unless they use the same chipset drivers). Likewise if there are different gfx cards (whether AGP or onboard).

When I change mobo's I always reformat etc. HERE is an Anandtech article on how to change mobo's w/o a reinstall etc.

why not goto one of them build your own sites? Get all the same specs, have them build it just don't get the OS.
