I am interesting in purchasing a new motherboard:

Intel D845EBG2

my friend and i encountered problems with this mobo
it's detailed here.it's our fault, not the mobo's actually
and being an intel mobo, it doesn't have overclocking options

I would go for a Abit, Shuttle, ECS, etc.. and Not a company board as they are pretty stripped down.

If you're not planning on overclocking, and the board has the features you need, Intel boards are easily as good as it gets.

If I was building a new system for my mother right now, I would use an Intel board.

I want the overclocking options, so no go for me, but the quality is second to none.

I personally as of now have an Intel Motherboard and love it. Yes it may not perform as well as other motherboards but Intel is know your stability and reliability and I put that first. You may want to try their "Bluemountain" motherboard it looks nice :)!
