Thinking of picking a new w/ warranty lens from craigslist ... is there anyway to tell whether the item is really authentic and comes with the USA warranty?

How can I tell the difference between a real vs grey market item?

In most cases the manufacturer won't honor your warranty unless you send in a copy of the original receipt along with the USA warranty card. Make sure you get a copy of the receipt from the seller.

A new lens will come with the appropriate paperwork so you know it's authentic and has a USA warranty. You will need a copy of the seller's original proof of purchase to be able to use any manufacturer's warranty. Also check to see whether the original vendor was a authorized dealer.

Make sure that you check the aperture blades (for oil) and the condition of the glass (for scratches). Definitely mount the lens and check focus accuracy, aperture, and everything else.
