Buying new laptop: Intel vs. AMD 64?

I'm buying a new laptop and find myself limited in the number of options when it comes to Athlon 64 systems under $800. I'm tempted to buy a laptop with an Intel processor instead, but I'm worried about long-term performance when Windows Vista becomes the standard PC OS. Do any of you know how much of a performance hit I'll take when Windows Vista becomes standard? Heat and battery life are some other concerns. Intel processors tend to use less power and generate less heat right? This will be my first laptop, so I'm new to all of this. Should I be considering other factors as well? What companies do you all recommend for a reliable laptop? Toshiba and Dell seem to be my top choices right now.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

For laptop you go with the core duo chip. I would get a dell, just because it is cheap. You can get a core duo laptop from Dell for under $800. CPU shouldn't be a problem when it comes to Vista. So you shouldn't be concerned about it.

Agree with Moonsite - your best value is a core duo Dell. Just avoid one with Sony batteries! 🙂

Wait for Merom.

Merom > Everything else, including Core Duo. (Yonah).

AMD's offerings in the mobile market never impressed me.
