Lol, met the guy at a burger joint in the hood. Totally cool guy though, and his story seemed legit. It was a craigslist purchase. Brand new in box though, great price. I'll unpack it shortly and dive in.

Thanks for all the advice, I will examine all of it!:)

The next Powerbook product line update likely is in 1-3 Months (Buyers's Guide@macrumors.com). But in the meantime, $1700 is a very good offer.

If you want to bring out the best of the Powerbook, get as much RAM as you can get :)

You can find some software suggestions for OS X here.

Opinions?

The Mac Mini is able to do this tasks and a cheap way to tinker with OS X.

But I would suggest to upgrade the RAM to 512 MB because the (notebook) hd is reported to not exactly break speed records so virtual memory usage would slow down the system.

Well I have a 512mb dimm on hand but there's two 256'ers already in there, right? So I would have 768 total? Is that enough?

i would suggest upgrading to 1 gig. 512 should be ok and so should any weird combo above that. but some mac programs, despite X having been around for a while, are just sloppy ports.
so...instead of shelling out the cash for ram, just stick to good mac or mac-only developers . check out their sites and see if they update a lot because otherwise, some programs (like IE mentioned above) are so sloppy they crash or are needlessly memory hogs.

one of the apple-standard programs that can get memory insane is garage band. personally, i dont like the program unless you have a midi keyboard...but even with tons of memory on some powerbooks, ive had trouble running it.
