for that kind of money, go for the Panasonic RP82. It has the newest decoding chip (farjouda (sp?) and it plays DVD-A and has Progressive Scan.

... if you're looking to get an HDTV soon. HD-DVD will be out in a couple years, so you would need a new DVD player to play that. If you have just regular equipment, i'd say save some money and spend about $100 on a decent Toshiba DVD player

$200 sounds like too much unless you want gingerbread that you can't use with your existing TV, like progressive scan. And for all who say "buy for the future", I say BS. When the future comes, then buy what you need. Anything else is weak rationalization to spend more money than you need for a top-end model.

Look at something like the Toshiba SD-1800 for about $100-$120. Panasonic makes good DVD players as well.

Go get an Xbox and the remote. It actually has fair dvd playback as well as the ability to play xbox games.

i'd go with that, you can't tell the difference between XBox and a good DVD player on regular equipment

I picked up a Sony DVP-NS715P, plays DVD, VCD, SVCD, DVD+R and DVD+RW, has progressive scan and several other nice features like 40 disk memory to pickup where you left off, block noise reduction, (it actually does improve the picture quality poorly encoded vcd?s and svcd?s) several display modes, etc. all for $200. It?s the best one I?ve owed so far.

Before you buy any check out VCDHelp, on the left hand side under DVD Player they give a good run down on a lot of diferrent player.

If you don't have and HDTV or flat screen (or not planning to buy one in the future), then Progressive Scan would be a waste of money.
There are a lot of good DVD players out there for ~$100, so take your pick. Just make sure you get one that supports component or s-video (depending on your TV's capabilities), and plays mp3's and svcd's (if you like those ;) ).

Personally, I'd spend a little time reading through the forums at this site: Nerd-Out Forums - Quite a few people have contributed quite a bit of information in this forum. Personally, I feel that $200 is overkill for a DVD player. Sam's Club used to sell Daewoo players for $89 that basically have everything with the exception of progressive scan capabilities. I have one of these players and it has been great for the past 10 months that I have owned it. I previously owned a Toshiba player that was good - but the Daewoo is awesome! Actually, once I purchased the Daewoo and could play my MP3s, I sold my 200 disc CD changer.

Apex, Koss, and mintek are pretty good for special need users, but for the most part I would go with a panasonic or a Sony DVP S560D (has built in dolby 5.1 decoder chip).

For $200 I'd buy an X-Box which is capable of playing DVD movies.

Otherwise save your money and go to CostCo B&M and buy either their
$99 Toshiba or $89 Panasonic

Both are excellent DVD Players.

do a bit of research to insure that your player is bios flashable so you can disable the regionlock and play burned DVD's <~ VERY IMPORTANT!!

I don't know if you'd even want a changer model, but I decided to replace my single disc DVD player with a changer model (a Samsung I got for $130 at Sam's Club, Circuit City has it for $150) so I could get rid of my existing CD Changer and clear up a little space in the entertainment center for other goodies like the digital cable tuner I just got today.
