Buying LCD...Need advice! :)

Ok, so what I really want is the dell 2001fp. I saw my friend's in action and i'm just floored by it. The real problem here is money, i'm in college and things are tight. I dropped my crt and it's got this awful discolored area and i just want to get a new display.

These are the options. I've been waiting and waiting(for about 3 weeks) for the dell screen to go on sale. My friend said he snagged it for 689$ which seems ludicrous to me. I'd pay that, but I just don't see how it would ever be that price. I've seen the 719$'s but then they nail me on tax and shipping so it's like 800$

I've been searching my options and I found a SONY SDM-S74/S on newegg for 419$ shipped. It's a 17" panel with DVI and a 16ms response. DVI and a low response are nessecary, but the size thing has never been that big a deal to me, i just thought it'd be awesome to have a 20" display. I'm posting this message in a computer lab on a 17" display and i think it'd be great. My 19" crt right now is like 18" viewable anyways.

So what i'm asking you guys, am i just talking myself into this? is the dell worth waiting for? any predictions on when it will be lower?

Also, if you can only answer one question, what i really wanna know how that SONY screen is. It seems like a great price and I feel like sony has a great reputation. If size is the only reason to spend the extra like 400+ $ on that dell screen it's just not worth it in my current $$ situation. If the sony screen is crappier PLEASE Let me know cause i want to order SOMETHING SOON!

EDIT: Also, I'm running a 9700 pro, so running newer games at 1600x1200 isn't really an option, should that affect my purchase so i can run games at native res? thanks!

EDIT: anyone know if i just bought this and i wasn't satisfied if newegg would just take it back no charge within 30 days? thanks.

you guys are great, thanks in advance for the help!

If your a perfectionist, then the Dell in my opinion would be a difficult choice as it may have stuck/dead pixels as there is approximately 32% more pixels than a standard 17" LCD (Native 1280 x 1024). Most manufacturers 17" panels are coming out of manufacture with zero pixel defects nowadays. Out of interest did your friends 2001FP have any stuck/dead pixels or is this a myth perhaps?

My friend's panel has 3 bad pixels.

UPDATE: the 2001fp is on sale for 679$ i got the code from gotapex.com I went for it..i'll let you guys know how it turns out. The rca input will be awesome. 767$ shipped...i can't believe I just spent that much.

It's a beautiful monitor and it will last you a good long time. Mine had two red pixels, but I really never notice them unless I'm looking carefully. Certainly never when playing a game.

I have a radeon 9700 Pro also, and it runs games (halo, splinter cell) just fine at 1600x1200 as long as you keep Anti-Aliasing turned off.

Thanks for the encouragement. Says will ship by friday. AHH can't wait. I do like the 3 year warranty. I guess every couple years you gotta bite down and just get a display right? right? 🙂
